Mid-Atlantic three stars: December 29, 2025

Plenty of racing action took place throughout the Mid-Atlantic this past week.

Here’s a look at the “three stars” of each track:

REGION’S BEST

FIRST STAR: HOLLYWOOD IMPORT. The local road to the Preakness Stakes continued on Saturday with the Heft Stakes for 2-year-old colts and geldings at seven furlongs. Hollywood Import, one of three starters for the powerhouse Gary Capuano barn, led all the way and prevailed by 1 3/4 lengths. He broke on top and crossed to the rail and the lead from the outside post position six. He set an uncontested first quarter of 23.80 and a first half of 47.28. He was likely to be very tough to catch after setting such slow fractions, and proved to be so, opening up by four lengths as they passed the eighth pole. Favorite and stablemate Probably Dreaming cut into the margin somewhat, but the wire came in time for Hollywood Import, who covered the distance over a fast track in 1:27.06. He improved to 2-1-0 in four starts with earnings of $116,200. He’s owned by Pocket 3’s Racing LLC and trained by Gary Capuano.

SECOND STAR: PEACH TIE. One race prior, a trio of 2-year-old fillies squared off in the seven-furlong Gin Talking Stakes. Peach Tie went off as the longest shot in the field, going off at 2-1. However, she defied expectations with an impressive eight-length win. She pressed 7-10 favorite Just Philtored from her outside, took control on the turn, and kicked on to an easy win, covering the distance in 1:27.30. She’s now 4-for-5 lifetime, with her only defeat coming on the Presque Isle Downs synthetic in her second career start, with earnings of $169,995. Sheldon Russell rode this Brereton Jones homebred for trainer Brittany Russell.

THIRD STAR: DR. STEVE. This Pennsylvania-bred gelding capped a big year on Wednesday with his third consecutive victory. He won a second-level sprint against fellow Keystone Staters by 3 1/4 lengths. Sent off as the 7-10 favorite, he sat a great trip off an early duel, watching Rebel Invasion and Party at Sam’s duel each other into a sound defeat. When those leaders tired, Dr. Steve took full advantage. He opened up by six lengths in the stretch, and while Gordian Knot cut into the margin late, the wire came in plenty of time for Dr. Steve. He’ll end 2025 with a record of 4-2-2 in eight starts, with earnings of $136,440. He’s owned by Philip Rubin Racing Stable LLC, trained by Michael Pino, and ridden by Mychel Sanchez.

LAUREL PARK

FIRST STAR: HOLLYWOOD IMPORT. Led all the way in the Heft and ensured that the outcome was never in doubt.

SECOND STAR: PEACH TIE. It’s not every day a Brittany Russell-trained runner wins as the biggest longshot in the field, but that was the case in the Gin Talking.

THIRD STAR: RAISE CAIN. Made his first start in almost a year a winning one on Sunday, kicking away to win a third-level route easily in his first appearance for the Brittany Russell stable.

PARX RACING

FIRST STAR: DR. STEVE. Took advantage of a perfect trip to score a huge victory.

SECOND STAR: LATTA. Rallied from well off the pace to win a second-level route on Monday, outkicking fellow closers Hoku and Duke of Gloucester for his fourth win of the season.

THIRD STAR: YOU’RE THE ONE. Led for every step to capture a second-level Pennsylvania-bred route for fillies and mares on Tuesday.
