Breaking sharply from post 6 under Mychel Sanchez, the Maximus Mischief colt immediately took control over the sloppy, sealed track, leading through fractions of :22.58 and :45.32 while a length clear. Turning for home, he drifted off the rail but remained well within himself, responding readily when asked and drawing off to win by 3 1/2 lengths.

Running time was 1:23.29 for seven furlongs.

Trained by Robert E. Reid Jr., the Cash Is King LLC and LC Racing LLC homebred Mailata continued his rapid progression following a maiden-breaking score over the same surface on Oct. 29. After finishing third and fourth in his first two outings, the Pennsylvania-bred delivered a breakout performance last time when stretching to a mile, and he backed it up here with an even sharper display at seven furlongs.

His win in the Nursery improved his record to 4-2-0-1 with earnings of $114,500. He paid $9.40 as the second choice in a field of seven.

Behind the winner, 6-5 favorite Mister Me tracked the pace from the inside and proved clearly second-best, while Red Zone Runner recovered from a sluggish start to close along the rail for third, two-plus lengths out of second but a dozen clear of fourth.

In the day’s other stakes:

  • The Tyler Servis-trained Divine Intentions posted an easy score in the Shamrock Rose for state-bred two-year-old fillies, leading throughout to win by three lengths under Frankie Pennington. Divine Intentions is 2-for-3 in her career.
  • Trainer Michael Moore’s decision to scratch Alani from last weekend’s Willa On the Move at Laurel Park proved presicent, as the four-year-old Competitive Edge filly outlasted a stern challenge from Mega Mil to inch away to a two-length win in the Cornucopia Stakes for older fillies and mares. Ridden by Andy Hernandez, Alani won her seventh career race, from 19 starts, and earned her second stakes win, boosting her earnings past $400,000.
  • Jockey Mychel Sanchez notched his second stakes win of the day when Call Me Fast narrowly edged Ninetyprcentmaddie to win the Turkey Trot. It was the second consecutive win for the Jamie Ness trainee, a six-year-old Dialed In gelding who has twice finished second in Grade 3 company.
  • Trainer Butch Reid and jockey Mychel Sanchez were at it again in the nightcap, teaming up to win the Let’s Give Thanks Stakes with Maximus Meridius, a head better than Howgreatisnate. A four-year-old Maximus Mischief gelding, Maximus Meridius won the third stake of his career.
