Here’s a look at the “three stars” of each track:

FIRST STAR: TEACHINTHERELEASE. His season may not have started until mid-July, but Teachintherelease certainly had a full campaign. He earned his fifth win of the year, and third in stakes company on Saturday at Charles Town when he won the Randy Funkhouser Memorial Stakes. Sent off as the 1-10 favorite, the lowest price one can go off at at Charles Town, he rated off the leaders, Paymengold, in the early stages. As they rounded the third and final turn of the 1 1/8-mile contest, Teachintherelease easily made the front and crushed the field by 5 1/2 lengths. It’s his second consecutive win in the Funkhouser, and as noted above, his third stakes win of the year. He previously captured the Frank Gall Memorial Stakes and the Sam Huff Breeders’ Classic. The 5-year-old John Casey-bred gelding ran the distance in 1:55.28 for owner Robert Cole, trainer Stephen Murdock, and jockey Carlos Lopez.

SECOND STAR: SIEGE OF BOSTON. A field of six traveled 1 1/16 miles on the grass in Laurel Park’s Saturday feature, a third-level route for older males. Siege of Boston picked up his first win since June 2023 by 1 3/4 lengths. He got a great setup, rating towards the back of the pack behind a contentious early pace. Jorge Ruiz asked him for run around the final turn, and the 5-year-old responded in kind, outkicking McCullough for the win. He covered the distance on a firm course in 1:40.12, improving his career record to 4-for-26 lifetime with earnings of $566,671. He’s owned by Joseph Allen LLC and trained by Jimmy Toner.

THIRD STAR: WILD VINE. One day prior, Laurel hosted a third-level race for older males at one mile on dirt. Laurel-loving Wild Vine relished his return to this track, winning by 3 1/2 lengths. He went off as the 17-10 favorite off a pair of placings in Pennsylvania-bred stakes company. He raced in second early on and allowed Quick to Accuse to set an uncontested lead. When roused, Wild Vine went past Quick to Accuse and pulled clear in the stretch to win. It’s his fourth win of the year in 10 starts, three of them on this track, and his ninth career win in 26 races. Mychel Sanchez rode the winner for trainer Jamie Ness, whose Jagger Inc. co-owns him with Super C Racing Inc.

LAUREL PARK

FIRST STAR: SIEGE OF BOSTON. Got back to the winner’s circle with a strong closing move.

SECOND STAR: WILD VINE. His big win on Friday may have punched his ticket to the Bob Manfuso Stakes.

THIRD STAR: MADDIE ROWLAND. Rode her 100th career winner on Saturday, guiding Mike Gorham trainee Winning Trip to victory in the 2nd race.

CHARLES TOWN

FIRST STAR: TEACHINTHERELEASE. He’s proven himself as the best West Virginia-bred in the land by a lot; is a try against open stakes company in his near-future?

SECOND STAR: RADAR ALERT. Rallied three-wide and got up in the closing strides to win a second-level sprint on Thursday for his third win of the year.

THIRD STAR: BATTLESHIPPER.

PARX RACING

FIRST STAR: HOLD YOUR BREATH. Battled for the early lead and exploded in the stretch to win a second-level sprint by 9 3/4 lengths on Wednesday, covering 6 1/2 furlongs in a sharp 1:17.

SECOND STAR: MYCHEL SANCHEZ. Turned a riding hat trick on both Tuesday and Wednesday.

THIRD STAR: CAROUSEL QUEEN. Sat a great trip off the early pace and prevailed in a first-level sprint on Monday, racking up a large margin of her own as she crossed the wire 9 1/2 lengths in front.
