Full siblings could make it Family Night at WVBC
Saturday night might just be Family Night at Charles Town Races as the track hosts the 39th edition of the West Virginia Breeders’ Classics. Equine Family Night, that is.
Several siblings will have a chance to garner bragging rights among their respective families throughout the card.
Three full sibling by Fiber Sonde all have legitimate shots – two are favored – as do a pair of full brothers by Upstart.
Millionaire Muad’dib, Duncan Idaho, and Overnight Pow Wow are all by Fiber Sonde and out of the late, ultra-productive Indian Charlie mare, Holy Pow Wow, also the dam of past Cavada champion Late Night Pow Wow, who will be among the two newest inductees into the West Virginia-bred Hall of Fame.

Overnight Pow Wow, the last foal out of Holy Pow Wow, will arrive as the defending champion of the $125,000 Cavada Breeders’ Classic for fillies and mares for owner-trainer Cynthia McKee, who sent out four winners on the WVBC card a year ago. Overnight Pow Wow has won once in four starts this year after being disqualified for a medication violation following a win in her July 5 seasonal debut, and sports nine wins and nearly $320,000 banked from 15 career outings.
She hasn’t raced beyond 4 ½ furlongs this season.
“I thought about taking her out of town and running her once at Delaware Park,” said McKee, who actually paid her late husband, owner-trainer-breeder John McKee, $40,000 for a half-interest in Overnight Pow Wow as a yearling. “But I didn’t want to encounter any problems shipping, so I just stayed close to home and waited for a race to go. She’s coming into this race okay, but I don’t have the strong hand that I had a year ago. I think she’ll run well, but I couldn’t get a 6 1/2 [furlong race] to go, and she’s better going two turns.”
While Overnight Pow Wow will arrive as the tepid favorite for a Cavada repeat, her older, full brothers, Duncan Idaho and Muad’dib, will head to the WVBC card on opposite ends of the spectrum.
Muad’dib had earned over $1 million in his career performing at a high level in the various two-turn and three-turn events at Charles Town, but he is winless in eight seasonal tries. He is 6-1 on the morning line in the nine-furlong, $300,000 Sam Huff Classic.
Duncan Idaho, by contrast, has won all five of his starts this year for Runco and has emerged as the best one-turn sprint specialist since the late Dr. Feelgood, who won all 11 of his starts at the 4 1/2-furlong distance.
Duncan Idaho, who boasts 15 wins from 22 career tries overall for Runco and owner David Raim, is the defending champion of the West Virginia Dash For Cash and looms the 6-5 morning line favorite in that event following sharp scores in the Last Enchantment Stakes and It’s Only Money Stakes.
Muad’dib, once the class of state-bred runners having won the first 10 starts of his career before running second to Art Collector in the 2022, Grade 2 Charles Town Classic, boasts an impressive resume of 17 wins and over $1 million banked from 37 career outings despite not winning a race since his 2024 finale last December. Muad’dib was third in last year’s Classic, won by stablemate Runaldo, and he could very well join the defending champion and fellow stablemate Coastal Mission, another state-bred millionaire trained by Runco, in this year’s renewal.
A pair of other full-brothers bred by James F. Miller, Pascaline and Social Chic, will also be looking to garner stakes success this Saturday night in two separate, two-turn events. Both are by Upstart and out of the Harlan’s Holiday mare Tres Chic.
Pascaline, last year’s champion West Virginia-bred two-year-old male and Laurel Futurity hero, is 2-1 on the morning line for the Russell Road for sophomores, while Social Chic, approaching $500,000 in career earnings, is 9-2 on the morning line for the Onion Juice BC, named for the hero of the first Classic and a member of the inaugural West Virginia-bred Hall of Fame class.
