Tale of two races for Mischief in Motion, Soleil Volant

Live Oak Plantation’s Mischief in Motion and Jacques Dupuis Jr., Luke Bourque and Bobby Sutton’s Soleil Volant gave fans two different looks at winning in Saturday’s turf features for 3-year-olds at Delaware Park.

In the $151,500 Christiana Stakes for fillies, Mischief in Motion went straight to the front under Angel Cruz and never looked back, coasting home 3 ½ lengths clear. The daughter of Into Mischief, trained by Michael Trombetta, set dawdling fractions of :51.35 and 1:16.65 before finishing the 1 1/8 miles over soft turf in 1:51.99. Don’t Jinx It finished second, a half-length ahead of Ambaya in third. So Darn Pretty and Starry Night were scratched.

The win was her third from eight starts, boosting her earnings to $166,600. She paid $12.40 to win.

Cruz credited lessons from his earlier turf win on the card for the wire-to-wire victory.

“Speed’s holding. She broke good, so I decided not to take anything away from her,” he said. “I slowed it down and she responded really well.”

Cruz’s earlier turf win, also in front-running fashion, came aboard La Liberta, who paid $147.80 to win.

Later in the afternoon, Soleil Volant stormed from off the pace to capture the $152,000 Kent Stakes, prevailing by a nose over Thundering after a tight stretch battle. Ridden by Samuel Marin for trainer H. Graham Motion, the son of Karakontie covered the 1 1/8 miles in 1:50.73 on soft turf. Versus was another 1 ½ lengths back in third, while 2-1 favorite Geometry settled for fourth.

Church and State, Maui Strong, and Dreambuilder were scratched.

“I had a clean trip and when I asked him toward the end of the race, he was there for me,” Marin said. “We had to fight, but I had a lot of horse in my hands, so I was confident.”

The victory improved Soleil Volant’s record to two wins from 12 starts and pushed his bankroll to $193,976.
