LRL: Graham Motion takes strong quartet to Saturday stakes
Trainer Graham Motion will be a central figure in a pair of $100,000 turf stakes at Laurel Park Saturday, sending out two runners in each event.
In the Sensible Lady Turf Dash, the sixth race, Motion saddles Toupie and Queen of the Mud. The Sensible Lady is scheduled to be contested at six furlongs.
Four-year-old Toupie, making her likely career finale before heading to the breeding shed, gets a chance to bow out at a six-furlong distance Motion thinks is ideal.
“I think 5 1/2 is a little quick for her, to be honest, Motion said. “This is probably going to be her last start before she goes to be a mom, so I wanted to pick a nice spot to go out in.”

Toupie won the 5 ½-furlong Stormy Blues at Laurel last year, and earlier this year, she won the 6 ½-furlong Grade 3 Las Cienegas at Santa Anita Park.
Queen of the Mud, second in this event a year ago, is a stakes winner in her own right but arrives off a couple of off-color outings, including an eight-place finish last out at Woodbine. Motion is hoping for a bounceback effort.
“She was very sharp [out of the gate],” Motion acknowledged. “I’m not sure it really suited her up there like I thought it would. I’m just really trying to get her back on track, back to her old form.”
Toupie is the 2-1 morning line favorite and will have Daniel Centeno in the irons. Jevian Toledo will ride Queen of the Mud, who is 8-1 on the morning line.
One race later in the All Along Stakes at 1 1/8 miles, Motion will send out No Show Sammy Jo and Sirona. No Show Sammy Jo, a five-year-old Grade 3-placed mare by Lope de Vega, enters as the defending champ.
No Show Sammy Jo has yet to find her best this season, but Motion thinks this a good spot for her to find her best stride.
“She’s been a little disappointing this year for me,” Motion said. “I thought she was one of my best mares going into the season. This seems like a more reasonable spot to get her back on track. I think the 1 1/8-mile distance [helps].”
Sirona, a multiple stakes winner who is Group-placed in Europe, makes her U.S. debut. Bred in Germany, she has raced entirely up to now in Great Britain and France. Her most recent start was a sixth-place finish in the Group 3 Princess Elizabeth at Epsom. Most of her starts have come at one mile.
“You’d think [nine furlongs] would be a distance that’s within her scope,” Motion said. “I haven’t done that much with her since she came to me. Coming into the fall, we only have so many chances to run, so I wanted to get a chance to get her started. This seemed like a really good spot to try.”
No Show Sammy Jo, the 9-5 morning line favorite, will have Jorge Ruiz up, while Sirona, with Centeno up, is 5-2 on the morning line.
