Timonium heading into final weekend
During the opening weekend at Timonium, trainer Anthony Farrior zoomed to the top of the standings, while on the jockey side, the race is tight.
Timonium’s quick, seven-day stand concludes this coming weekend. The Maryland State Fair track will race Friday through Labor Day Monday and then disappear for another year.
Farrior, last year’s leading trainer, went 5-for-10 to establish an early lead. Jose Corrales (3-for-12) is his nearest pursuer. Farrior has entered 24 horses for the last four days of the meet, while Corrales has 18, so odds are they will finish one-two in the standings.

Other trainers with multiple wins over opening weekend were Jamie Ness and Troy Singh, both 2-for-5, and Hugh McMahon (2-for-4). Nineteen trainers won at least one race.
Farrior has won 2.04 more races than his odds would have predicted, the highest total of added wins. Of those trainers with four or more starts, McMahon is second (0.84), followed by Singh (0.79), Corrales (0.65), and Rudy Sanchez-Salomon (0.23).
Carlos Lopez (4-for-17) and Yedsit Hazlewood (4-for-10) are leading the jockey standings in wins, but there’s a crowd behind them. Marshall Mendez and Tais Lyapustina have three wins apiece, while Jorge Hernandez, Andres Chavez, and Arnaldo Bocachica have two. Fourteen riders have at least one win.
Here’s what’s on tap this weekend at the Big T:
- Friday is Maryland Thoroughbred Hall of Fame day, with Smart Angle and Caveat being inducted into the Hall of Fame. The nine-race program is highlighted by two Maryland-restricted allowance contests.
- Saturday’s nine-race program an allowance/optional claimer for two-year-olds, a second-level allowance for older runners, and another Maryland-restricted contest for fillies and mares. Also on tap: a live rendition of the National Anthem by Kate Solomon and a rescue dog dash between races one and two.
- On Sunday Mia Gorman will perform the National Anthem live. The eight-race card includes a Maryland-restricted allowance for older runners split into two divisions going 6 ½ furlongs.
- Labor Day Monday is closing day for the Big T. The eight-race program concludes with a Maryland-restricted allowance going 1 1/16 miles and a maiden special weight for two-year-olds dashing four furlongs.
Post time at Timonium is 12:10 p.m.
