Mid-Atlantic three stars: October 5, 2026
Plenty of racing action took place throughout the Mid-Atlantic this past week.
Here’s a look at the “three stars” of each track:
REGION’S BEST

FIRST STAR: REGALED. On Saturday at Delaware Park, Regaled put her name in the history books by becoming the eighth two-time winner of the Delaware Handicap. Since taking last year’s renewal, she had finished second or third in graded stakes competition three times, including a third-place finish in last year’s Breeders’ Cup Distaff. However, she had not yet found the winner’s circle again. Sent off as the 7-2 fourth choice in a wide-open eight-horse field, she drafted well off the pace in the early stages, while longshot Low Country Magic and favored Nerazurri set fast fractions. Regaled made a strong move after the leaders on the final turn, and easily rolled by Nerazurri while outkicking fellow closer Chasten. She hit the wire three lengths in front, going 1 1/8 miles on a muddy track in 1:50.48. This was her fifth win in 24 career starts, and pushed her career earnings over seven figures, to $1,301,823. She’s owned by Ribble Farms LLC, Hoolie Racing Stable LLC, and Kamp Racing Stables LLC, trained by Whit Beckman, and ridden by Jose Ramos.
SECOND STAR: BARBADIAN RUNNER. Another horse earned millionaire status earlier on the Saturday card at Delaware. Barbadian Runner, in his first appearance at Delaware since finishing second in last year’s Delaware Derby, rallied from off the pace to win the Battery Park Stakes. Cooke Creek went to the front and led almost the whole way through modest fractions, while Barbadian Runner drafted in fourth place in the five-horse field. It looked like he was up against it trying to close off of that slow pace, but he got into gear on the final turn and began to stoutly rally in the stretch. He got up in the last sixteenth to win by three-quarters of a length. The 4-year-old gelding, bred in Maryland by Shamrock Farm and purchased by AJ Will Win Stables LLC for $5,000 as a yearling in 2023, has won ten times in 26 career starts and has earned $1,100,250. He’s trained by Henry Walters and ridden by Forest Boyce.
THIRD STAR: WINTERFELL. A similar group of older males met at Laurel Park on Saturday, as a field of six did battle on a similarly wet surface in the one-mile Polynesian Stakes. Winterfell, in his second start off a seven-month layoff, proved that the break was no problem with a two-length victory. He battled with J J Zo Zo and Bold Diversion for the early lead, then dispatched those longshots and opened up a clear lead. Zero Blitz did his best to mow him down, and did manage to secure second, but proved no match for the winner, who crossed the wire two lengths in front in 1:37.62. This was his second career stakes win, with his other such victory coming on this track in the 2024 City of Laurel Stakes. Sheldon Russell was up for the SF Racing/Starlight Racing conglomerate and trainer Brittany Russell; the same trainer/jockey combination won this race last year with Post Time.
LAUREL PARK
FIRST STAR: WINTERFELL. He’s now 3-for-3 on this track, continuing his streak with his Polynesian win.
SECOND STAR: ANNA’S PROMISE. Set the pace and dug in to finish off a gate-to-wire score in Saturday’s Twixt Stakes.
THIRD STAR: WALT’S NOTION. Cruised on the lead in the James F. Lewis III Stakes earlier on the Saturday card, cementing his status as the Maryland Million Nursery favorite.
CHARLES TOWN
FIRST STAR: CIRCLE P. Raced wide throughout and got up in the last jump over longtime leader Showstopper Copper to win an open allowance sprint by a nose on Thursday.
SECOND STAR: DELIGHTFUL DIXIE. Earned her sixth win of the Charles Town season on Friday in a gate-to-wire starter optional claiming dash triumph.
THIRD STAR: THEYCALLHIMGOLDIE. Dominated a West Virginia-bred first-level allowance field by five lengths later on the Friday program.
DELAWARE PARK
FIRST STAR: REGALED. Displayed her ability and class in a sharp DelCap victory, earning a spot in the Breeders’ Cup Distaff starting gate in the process.
SECOND STAR: BARBADIAN RUNNER. Got up to win the Battery Park, setting him up nicely for a repeat bid in the Maryland Million Classic.
THIRD STAR: FULL ACCESS. Sat off the pace and kicked away in the stretch in Saturday’s Rocky Run Stakes.
MEADOWLANDS
FIRST STAR: BABY BLOCKS. Saved ground most of the way and closed in the two-path to beat the boys in a first-level allowance sprint on Saturday, for her third win of the year in seven starts.
SECOND STAR: PEONY. Made a well-timed move under Reylu Gutierrez and got up in a first-level allowance dash of her own on Friday.
THIRD STAR: GOLDEN RING. Closed with interest from well off the pace to win a Jersey-bred second-level allowance route for fillies and mares on Saturday, her first victory of the year.
PARX RACING
FIRST STAR: MORE THAN GRACE. Extended her win streak to seven in a 4 1/4-length win in a Pennsylvania-bred second-level allowance sprint on Monday.
SECOND STAR: WINNING TIME. Fourth in the Banjo Picker Stakes last out, he bounced back in a Pennsylvania-bred allowance sprint of his own earlier on the Monday program.
THIRD STAR: WAVE RIDER. Dueled for the lead, opened up a clear lead, and held on by a head in a first-level allowance sprint for horses from the Keystone State on Monday.
