Delaware Park cancels July 17 card
Fifth cancellation in July
With poor air quality spurred by the Canadian wildfires wafting south into the Mid-Atlantic region, Delaware Park has canceled its live racing card scheduled for Friday, July 17.
The decision is “due to the current aqi [Air Quality Index] levels and forecasted levels,” the racing office told horsemen in a text message at 6:00 a.m. Friday morning.

As of 8:30 a.m., the AQI in Delaware Park’s area was 229, which is considered “very unhealthy” by the Environmental Protection Agency. The air quality is expected to improve on Saturday, though it still may be considered “unhealthy for sensitive groups,” such as people with heart or lung disease, older adults, and children.
Friday’s cancellation is Delaware’s fifth weather-related cancellation this meet, all of which have come in July.
