Preakness Profile: Great White
Gate scratch from the Derby looms large
Great White is one of the more unconventional runners in the race, having done most of his best work on synthetic surfaces. The John Ennis trainee won the John Battaglia Memorial at Turfway Park before fading to fifth in the Blue Grass Stakes at Keeneland. He has shown flashes of talent, though his dirt form remains somewhat uncertain.
The gelding is by young sire Volatile and out of a mare by Uncle Mo. That pedigree leans toward speed and athleticism, though the female family provides some stamina influences. Because he is a gelding, his connections can focus purely on racing without breeding considerations, which sometimes allows for a more patient developmental approach.
Great White likely will attempt to sit just behind the leaders and grind away late. His ability on traditional dirt is still an open question, but if he handles the surface better than expected, he could surprise.
