PRX: Mailata romps in depleted Future Stars

Mailata made the most of a short field in Tuesday’s $75,000 Parx Future Stars Stakes, rolling to an effortless victory in the seven-furlong test for 2-year-olds at Parx Racing.

The bay colt, trained by Butch Reid for Cash Is King LLC and LC Racing LLC, sat just off a brief duel before sweeping to the front three wide on the far turn and drawing away under Mychel Sanchez, stopping the clock in 1:27.20 on a fast track.

Mailata’s winning margin was 19 lengths.

The race unfolded with only three starters after six horses scratched, but Mailata and jockey Mychel Sanchez left little doubt, going off as the overwhelming 1-5 favorite. Higher Sense was clearly second best, while Tough Guy Tony, who dueled early inside, tired to finish third. Mailata carried 125 pounds as a stakes winner and was never seriously asked, earning a $45,000 winner’s share of the purse.

Mailata’s connections had options entering the race. The colt had been cross-entered in Saturday’s Jerome Stakes at Aqueduct, which offers Kentucky Derby qualifying points and a larger purse, but instead remained at Parx — a decision that paid off.

The Maximus Mischief colt, who paid $2.40 to win, has now won three straight, following his Pennsylvania Nursery Stakes score just over a month ago, and owns three victories and $159,500 in earnings from five career starts as he heads into the new year with momentum firmly on his side.

One race later, the Jamie Ness-trained Law School posted a seven-length victory as the 2-5 favorite in the $75,000 Parx Future Stars Filly Division.

With Yedsit Hazlewood in the irons, Law School stalked second choice Divine Intentions early before going to the attack on the far turn and drawing away smartly in 1:26.63 for seven furlongs on a fast main track.

The win was Law School’s third overall and first in stakes company. She is owned by Super C Racing, Inc. and Jagger, Inc.

In the Miss Behaviour for Pennsylvania-bred two-year-old fillies, Angie’s Reward wore down first-time starter Presenceisapresent to win by three parts of a length in 1:14.28 for six furlongs.

Trained by Brandon Kulp for owner and co-breeder Warrior’s Reward LLC, Angie’s Reward earned the second win of her career. Angel Rodriguez was in the irons.

NOTES Jockey Mychel Sanchez won twice after a three-win Monday and now has 303 wins this season. That’s good for fifth in the nation. Irad Ortiz, Jr. leads all riders with 351 wins… Apprentice rider Yedsit Hazlewood continued to make his case for an Eclipse Award this season. After concluding the Laurel fall meet with three consecutive riding triples, Hazlewood has won twice each of the last two days at Parx. Hazlewood now has 135 wins and is winning at a 23% clip…
