Mid-Atlantic three stars: November 24, 2025

Plenty of racing action took place throughout the Mid-Atlantic this past week.

Here’s a look at the “three stars” of each track:

REGION’S BEST

FIRST STAR: BARBADIAN RUNNER. This Maryland-bred, Henry Walters-trained gelding continued a sensational season at Laurel Park on Saturday. He went postward in the 1 ⅛-mile Richard W. Small Stakes against five rivals in search of his sixth stakes win of the year. Unusually for him, he was sent off as the 2-5 favorite. He made good on that promise with a 4 ¼-length win. Regular rider Forest Boyce rated him in midpack early on and asked him for his best on the far turn. He easily worked his way past early leader Secret Zipper and kicked on to victory, covering the distance on a muddy track in 1:53.40. The presumptive Maryland-bred 3-year-old male champion, bred by Shamrock Farm and owned by AJ Will Win Stables LLC, boosted his season record to 6-for-11 and lifetime record to 7-for-19, with career earnings of $790,630.

SECOND STAR: PETINGAS TWIN. Saturday’s Dave’s Friend Stakes at Laurel attracted a small, but prestigious, field of six. Petingas Twin, coming off a victory in a stakes-quality allowance race last out, finally broke through for his first career stakes win, thanks to a fantastic ride by Yedsit Hazlewood. The 4-year-old gelding raced towards the back of the pack early on, then moved after the lead at the top of the stretch and pulled to within 1 ½ lengths of the front. Prince of Jericho, in his first start since February, was clear of his rivals inside the eighth pole, but Hazlewood got into his mount and ate into the margin as the wire got closer. The two hit the line together, and the photo finish camera revealed that Petingas Twin prevailed by a nose. He covered six furlongs in the off going in 1:12.08 for owner James Wolf and trainer Anthony Farrior, and paid $6.40 to win as the slight 2-1 favorite.

THIRD STAR: GRAMMY GIRL. The first stakes affair on Laurel’s Saturday card, the Willa On the Move Stakes for filly and mare sprinters, was scratched down to a field of five. Heavily favored Takethemoneyhoney, making her much-anticipated first start since May, made a strong move to the front at the top of the stretch and looked ready to draw away from her rivals. However, New York shipper Grammy Girl made a similar move up the inside and refused to let Takethemoneyhoney by. The two engaged in an exciting duel in the stretch, but Grammy Girl fended off Takethemoneyhoney and won by a nose. It marked the first stakes win for the 4-year-old Saffie Joseph-trained filly, who improved her career record to 5-for-18 lifetime with earnings of $286,050. She’s owned by Red Storm Stable, Miller Racing LLC, and Flower Power Stables and was ridden by Mychel Sanchez.

LAUREL PARK

FIRST STAR: BARBADIAN RUNNER. He’s danced many dances this year and still has plenty of moves in him.

SECOND STAR: PETINGAS TWIN. Hazlewood showed why he’s the best rider in Maryland with a fantastic ride.

THIRD STAR: GRAMMY GIRL. Dug in on the rail and held on to win the Willa On the Move.

CHARLES TOWN

FIRST STAR: MASKEDANDMUMMED. Led all the way to take Saturday’s West Virginia Futurity as the 2-5 chalk.

SECOND STAR: ZACHAMUNDO. Kicked away to win a West Virginia-bred allowance sprint on Thursday by 3 1/2 lengths for his third win in eight career starts.

THIRD STAR: JUAN BELISARIO. Rode three winners on Friday, two of them for trainer Ronney Brown.

PARX RACING

FIRST STAR: GUAPONESS. Opened up and held on to win a first-level route on Wednesday; he’s won five times this year in 14 starts and finished second five more times.

SECOND STAR: JAMIE NESS. Wrapped up a natural training hat trick on Wednesday with his homebred Guaponess’s victory.

THIRD STAR: PATTY CAKES. Won a conditioned claiming route on Tuesday by open lengths; she’s now won three times on the year and has hit the board 12 times in a row.
