We catch up on the latest jockey and trainer statistics from Maryland. Who’s hot (and not)?
As the 2025 season rolls on, we’re tracking the jockey and trainer statistics from the year and weekly, and we dig in a little deeper.
The numbers:
LAUREL PARK JOCKEYS
Yedsit Hazlewood continued to have the hot hand this past week, and he now has the meet lead. Hazlewood won with six of 20 weekend mounts at Laurel, including four on Sunday, and now has 36 wins at the meet, five more than Jorge Ruiz… Sheldon Russell went 4-for-11, including two stakes wins, en route to Jockeys’ Guild Jockey of the Week honors… Mychel Sanchez, Tais Lyapustina, Martin Chuan, and Jean Briceno each won twice, and 18 riders won at least one race overall… Jaime Rodriguez, now riding in New York, has 75 Maryland wins, most of any rider, but Hazlewood is quickly closing the gap and now has 70… Sheldon Russell (65 wins) and Jevian Toledo (62) are the next pair, and they are fourth and third, respectively, in wins at the current meet with 18 and 22… Hazlewood leads all Maryland riders with 17.18 added wins (comparing actual wins to wins projected by runners’ odds) for the year to date, with Ruiz (11.47) second and Russell (6.91) just ahed of Raul Mena (6.90) in third… The range of all riders is 17.18 to (-9.32)… Among the 25 riders with at least 100 starts in Maryland, Sheldon Russell leads in percentage of purse earned with 22.18%, with Hazlewood (19.24%) and Ruiz (17.83%) next…

LAUREL PARK TRAINERS
Brittany Russell led all trainers with four wins, from 14 starts, during the past weekend… Joanne Shankle, Jamie Ness, Hugh McMahon, Claudio Gonzalez, and Gary Capuano each won twice… 22 trainers won at least one race… Russell has a solid lead at the meet in wins with 27, eight more than Mike Trombetta (19), with Jamie Ness (14) in third… For the year to date, Russell has 88 wins in Maryland, followed by Ness (70) and Magee (43)… Russell has 14.54 added wins in Maryland this year (comparing actual wins to wins projected by runners’ odds), the most of any trainer… Hugh McMahon (6.03) and Michael Gorham (5.55) are second and third, while at the current meet only, Horacio De Paz (4.52 added wins) is the leader… The range of all trainers for the year to date is 14.54 to (-4.38)… Among the 35 trainers with at least 60 starters in Maryland this year, Gary Capuano leads with 26.32% of available purse money earned… Russell (24.50%) and Ness (19.98%) are the next two…
