CT: Petty Perfect looks for more in My Sister Pearl
Saturday night’s $75,000 My Sister Pearl Stakes at Charles Town brings together a deep field of West Virginia-bred fillies and mares going 1 ⅛ miles, headlined by several familiar faces who have dominated the local female ranks throughout the season.
Petty Perfect, owned, trained and bred by Kristy Petty, looms the one to beat as she stretches out beyond seven furlongs for the first time. The 4-year-old daughter of Candygram has been in top form all year, winning three of seven starts including the West Virginia Cavada Breeders’ Classic last time out. Always consistent at Charles Town, she has finished in the top three in every local start since last winter and brings tactical speed and grit to the longer trip.
“She’s honest,” Petty said after the Cavada. “You can look at her form, and she’s always right there. She gives you 150 percent every time.”

Her main rival is the ultra-tough The Sky Is Falling, who has won 12 of 30 for Jeff Runco and owner David Raim. The 6-year-old Cupid mare beat Petty Perfect in the September Sadie Hawkins Stakes before rallying for second behind her in the Cavada. With regular rider Arnaldo Bocachica up, she again figures to come flying late if the pace is honest.
Taylor Mountain Farm sire Juba is well represented. Juba’s Parade, last year’s My Sister Pearl winner, returns to defend her title for Wade Sanderson. She’s had a quieter campaign this year but has proven stamina at the distance and a strong local résumé. Jubaslilballerina, recent winner of the West Virginia Roger Ramey Breeders’ Classic Distaff for Ron Sigler, also brings front-end speed and the pedigree to stay the trip.
Others with upset potential include Shewonttalktome, another Ronald Sigler-trained daughter of Juba who finished third in the Cavada after several sharp allowance victories, and Somesugarnspice, runner-up in April’s Original Gold Stakes.
With proven class from the Cavada and several capable routers reuniting, the My Sister Pearl should again offer a compelling late-season showcase for West Virginia’s best homebred mares.
