CT: Maskedandmummed scores in Casey Memorial

Maskedandmummed, a homebred for Casey’s Legacy LLC, displayed determination to capture Saturday night’s $75,000 James and Eleanor Casey Memorial Stakes for West Virginia-bred 2-year-old fillies.

Trained by Ronald Sigler and ridden by Antonio Lopez, the chestnut daughter of Candygram stalked the early pace before digging in through the lane to prevail by two lengths in 1:28.49 for seven furlongs over a fast track.

Longshot Truth and Justice (22-1), who set the early pace under Sunday Diaz Jr., fought on gamely but had to settle for second, while Edy’s Flame, who won the West Virginia Triple Crown Nutrition Breeders’ Classic last out, rallied along the rail to finish third. Orange Canyon, the 7-5 post time favorite, had little impact en route to a fifth-place finish.

Maskedandmummed, a half-sister to last year’s My Sister Pearl Stakes winner Juba’s Parade, is out of the Street Sense mare Mummers Parade. After finishing third in the West Virginia Triple Crown Nutrition Breeders’ Classic in her previous start, Maskedandmummed improved her record to two wins from six starts and boosted her earnings to $81,473.

The victory paid $8.40 for a $2 win wager and capped off a rewarding night for Casey’s Legacy, which also bred and owns the winner and won earlier on the card with Juba B Wild. With the longshot underneath, the exacta returned $56.70 for a one-dollar wager.
