LRL: Intriguing group set for Selima Stakes
Saturday’s $125,000 Selima Stakes at Laurel Park has drawn a competitive field of 2-year-old fillies, but much of the attention will center on three standouts: undefeated Ultimate Love, Irish import Amberia, and flashy debut winner She’s Country.
Ultimate Love, a Live Oak Plantation homebred trained by Michael Trombetta, has done nothing wrong in two starts. After breaking her maiden at Colonial Downs in July, the daughter of Curlin returned to Laurel to capture an allowance in August, showing tactical speed and professionalism each time. She stretches back out to a mile here, and her steady worktab suggests she’s holding her form well.
Amberia, making her North American debut for Graham Motion, brings solid European credentials. She broke her maiden easily at Leicester in July before running in two subsequent stakes at Newmarket and Royal Ascot, most recently facing Group 3 company in the Princess Margaret Stakes. With Motion’s strong record with European shippers, she looms a major threat if she adapts quickly to U.S. racing.
She’s Country, from the George Weaver barn, was a dominant six-length winner against New York-breds in her Saratoga unveiling, drawing clear after prompting the pace in a turf route. Purchased for $80,000 at OBS April, it’s not clear what she beat that day, but she certainly did it with style.
Several others add depth, including Spitfire, stakes-placed on the main track, Sweet Little Lila and Celebrity Warrior, both placed thus far, and recent maiden claiming winner My Lady Jbella.
All in all it should make for a compelling clash in one of Maryland’s key fall stakes for juvenile fillies.
