Clicquot slurps up Cotillion win

The Grade 1 Cotillion Stakes at Parx Racing on Saturday produced a breakthrough top-level victory for Clicquot, who wore down leader Dry Powder late to secure her second graded stakes win of the year.

The victory improved the daughter of Quality Road’s record to four wins from five starts and pushed her career bankroll to $840,153. The victory over three Grade 1 winners stamps her as a player in the filly division.

The Cotillion was one of two Grade 1 races on the Parx card, joining the Pennsylvania Derby as the Philadelphia-area track hosted its biggest day of the year.

Ridden confidently by Irad Ortiz Jr., Clicquot was unhurried early, settling midpack behind a pace set by La Cara, who was pressed hard by Dry Powder through fractions of 23.73 and 47.38. As the leaders began to tire around the far turn, Clicquot advanced between rivals, shifted out for clear running, and hooked into a prolonged stretch duel with Dry Powder, who had taken command at the top of the lane. The pair battled head-to-head, but Clicquot proved best in the final yards, edging away to score by a neck in 1:42.85 for 1 1/16 miles on a fast track.

Dry Powder held second, while local hopeful Ourdaydreaminggirl, trained at Parx by Lou Linder, charged late on the far outside to secure third, just a head farther back, at odds of 42-1.

Clicquot paid $12.60 to win. The exacta returned $86.20 for a two-dollar wager, while the trifecta paid $168.55 for 50 cents.

The outcome may mark a changing of the guard in the 3-year-old filly division. The three Grade 1 winners in the field, Scottish Lassie, La Cara, and Good Cheer, could do no better than fourth, fifth, and sixth, respectively.

Clicquot races in the colors of X-Men Racing IV, Madaket Stables, and SF Racing, is trained by Brendan Walsh, and was bred in Kentucky by Don Alberto Corporation. She has now added the Cotillion to her earlier triumph in the Grade 3 Indiana Oaks, and with her record of 4-for-5, she looms as a major player in the division as the fall championship races approach.
