CT: C’Mon Eileen romps in McKee Memorial
Four decades ago, Dexys Midnight Runners had a major hit with the song Come On Eileen. It’s not exactly history repeating — though as the man said, it does rhyme — but David Ross’s DARRS, Inc. might have a hit of their own with two-year-old filly C’Mon Eileen.
Under the Friday night lights at Charles Town, C’Mon Eileen lived up to her name in the John McKee Memorial Stakes for state-bred two-year-old fillies, charging to the front and never looking back, leaving the field behind in a hand-ridden 4 ½–furlong display. The filly, a $75,000 yearling purchase, is now unbeaten in two starts and has already banked $87,540 for Ross.

Trained by Brittany Russell and bred in West Virginia by Mark Allen Sell & Maurice F. Casey III, the daughter of Complexity out of Wide Open (by Flat Out) broke sharply from post 5 under Arnaldo Bocachica. After settling into stride, she widened her advantage around the far turn before cruising home six lengths clear in 51.37 seconds on a fast main track.
Edy’s Flame tried to keep pace along the rail but had to settle for second, while Truth and Justice finished a willing third.
At the betting windows, the crowd had it right, sending C’Mon Eileen off as the heavy 3-5 favorite. She returned $3.20 to win, $2.20 to place, and $2.20 to show. The $1 exacta with Edy’s Flame paid $3.60, the trifecta with Truth and Justice came back $5.90, and the superfecta with Mitoleisdynamite rounded out at $21.50.
With her easy score, C’Mon Eileen has quickly stamped herself as a favorite for next month’s West Virginia Breeders’ Classics.
The next stake at Charles Town, the Henry Mercer Memorial for state-bred two-year-olds, takes place Saturday evening.
