Mid-Atlantic three stars: September 8, 2025

Plenty of racing action took place throughout the Mid-Atlantic this past week.

Here’s a look at the “three stars” of each track:

REGION’S BEST

FIRST STAR: WORLD BEATER. Colonial Downs hosted six stakes races on Saturday, the headliner being the Old Dominion Derby for 3-year-olds at 1 1/8 miles on grass. Off a win in the Saratoga Derby last out, World Beater was the heavy 2-5 favorite. He lived up to expectations with a 1 3/4-length win. He rated in fourth, 3 1/2 lengths behind early leader Iron Hand, for the first half of the race. As they turned for home, he made his move towards the center of the track and pulled away under only mild urging from Jaime Torres. The Old Dominion Derby was his third stakes win of the year, having also taken the Audobon Stakes at Churchill Downs in addition to the Saratoga Derby. He ran the distance on a soft grass course, which was subjected to a heavy thunderstorm a little while before, in 1:53.01 for owner Pin Oak Stud LLC and trainer Riley Mott.

SECOND STAR: AS CATCH CAN. One race prior, 3-year-old fillies took center stage in the Old Dominion Oaks, traveling the same distance over the same rain-soaked course. 13-10 favorite Evershed led most of the way, but was overhauled by 16-1 longshot As Catch Can. She was ridden patiently by Torres, who kept her off the pace on the rail early on. She wore down the longtime leader in the stretch for her first career stakes win. She’s owned by Augustin Stables and trained by Jonathan Thomas.

THIRD STAR: POST TIME. Off a disappointing sixth-place effort in the Whitney Stakes last out, Post Time returned to the friendly confines of Laurel Park for Sunday’s Polynesian Stakes at one mile on dirt. The reigning Maryland-bred Horse of the Year benefited from the scratches of his two main rivals, Inveigled and Light the Way, leaving a field of three. Unsurprisingly, he made short work of them, winning by 17 lengths. The victory improved his record at Laurel to 10-for-10 while boosting his career earnings to $1,431,100. Regular rider Sheldon Russell was aboard for owner Hillwood Stable LLC and trainer Brittany Russell.

COLONIAL DOWNS

FIRST STAR: WORLD BEATER. Continued a strong year with an impressive Old Dominion Derby win.

SECOND STAR: AS CATCH CAN. Patience paid off for Jaime Torres and this longshot filly.

THIRD STAR: SAFE TRIP HOME. Came from off the pace and struck the front with a burst of energy to win the 1 1/2-mile Colonial Cup earlier on the Saturday card.

CHARLES TOWN

FIRST STAR: JUBA’S HAT TRICK. Rallied wide late to win a West Virginia-bred non-winners of three allowance in a 12-1 upset on Friday, upsetting odds-on choice Pascaline in the process.

SECOND STAR: IM THE DIRECTOR. Earned his fourth win of the year on Thursday with a sharp gate-to-wire win in a first-level sprint.

THIRD STAR: TOMORROW’S EDGE. Shook off the rust from a 20-month break with a 4 3/4-length triumph in a West Virginia-bred non-winners of two dash on Thursday.

DELAWARE PARK

FIRST STAR: HONOR CAT. Kicked away to impressively win a first-level dirt route on Saturday.

SECOND STAR: RUNAWAY JACK. Earned his first win of the season earlier on the Saturday card with a last-to-first win in a starter optional claiming sprint.

THIRD STAR: MILITIA. Made her own last-to-first rally to win a starter allowance by almost five lengths on Thursday.

LAUREL PARK

FIRST STAR: POST TIME. Got free money in the Polynesian Stakes and kept his perfect record at Laurel Park intact.

SECOND STAR: FOXY JUNIOR. Drew off to win Saturday’s Twixt Stakes as a prep for a Maryland Million Distaff title defense.

THIRD STAR: ALANI. Sat off the pace and got by late in an open allowance sprint for fillies and mares earlier on the Saturday program.

MONMOUTH PARK

FIRST STAR: CUGINO. Won Monday’s Red Bank Stakes with a wide late move.

SECOND STAR: YES THIS TIME. Went gate-to-wire in the final of the Malouf Auto Group starter series on Monday, winning the 1 3/8-mile contest by two lengths.

THIRD STAR: DUMB MONEY. Set the pace and fought hard to win a Jersey-bred sprint on Sunday.

PARX RACING

FIRST STAR: DROPLINE. Went gate-to-wire in a second-level sprint on Monday for his third win in his last five starts.

SECOND STAR: DREAMBUILDER. Lived up to the 1-5 hype with a front-running score in a first-level route on Wednesday.

THIRD STAR: COCOA’S VIVIAN. Made it two in a row later on the Wednesday program with a come-from-behind win in a first-level sprint.
