Hazlewood, Farrior take Timonium titles
“It’s very nice. I like it here,” apprentice rider Yedsit Hazlewood said in the Timonium winner’s circle Monday afternoon.
And why not?
Hazlewood won eight times in four days over the Big T’s closing weekend to secure the meet title. Hazlewood finished with 12 wins from 33 starters during the seven-day stand, comfortably ahead of Carlos Lopez and Arnaldo Bocachica, who won eight each.
Jorge Hernandez had something of a breakout meet himself, winning with six of 12 starters to finish fourth in the standings, while Angel Cruz rounded out the top five with four wins.

Hazlewood and Lopez had entered the final four days of the meet in a tie for the lead with four wins each. But Hazlewood two races Friday and added three more winners Saturday to seize the top spot.
On Labor Day, for good measure, he added three more wins to put the finishing touches on his first meet riding title
On the trainer side, Anthony Farrior won the first race of the meet and the last race of the meet and enough races in between to top the standings. Farrior won nine times from 30 starters to lock down his second consecutive Timonium training title.
Jose Corrales and Hugh McMahon notched six wins apiece to tie for second, with McMahon going 6-for-13. Jamie Ness and Kieron Magee finished tied for fourth with three wins each.
Two horses managed to win twice during the brief stand. Genieinabridle, trained by Hugh McMahon for his own Sola Dei Gloria Stable, won a claiming race on opening day and then moved up to take a Maryland-restricted allowance Aug. 30 with Jorge Hernandez in the irons. And on closing day, Morris Kernan, Jr. and Jagger, Inc.’s Kerness was the easiest kind of winner in a starter allowance for his second win of the meet.
Larry Rabold was the leading owner by wins with three, from six starters, while Euro Stable, which had a win, two seconds, and a third from six starters, led with $53,300 in purse earnings.
The meet’s one stake, the Shine Again for fillies and mares, went to Chip Reed’s Discreet Ops. Trained by Ben Feliciano, she drew away in the final furlong to win by 4 ½ lengths under jockey Carlos Lopez.
In the race for trainer bonuses – awarded based on points accrued via starts and in-the-money finishes – Anthony Farrior took top spot in the “big barn” standings with 89 points, easily outpacing Jose Corrales (54). In the “small barn” standings, Charles A. Frock and John Salzman, Jr. tied with 14 points.
Handle for the meet declined from $4.1 million to $3.6 million.
