Nick’s Picks: Colonial Downs picks Sept. 1, 2025
He’s probably the only public handicapper who’s ‘capped every race at Colonial Downs since Day One, and he’s back for more in 2025: Nick’s Picks returns with picks and analysis for every day of the Colonial meet.
- DATE/POST TIME: Sept. 1/12:30 p.m.
- RACES: 8
- CARRYOVERS: Pick 6, $2,454
RACE 1
In a Virgnia-restricted two-year-old filly $40k claiming dirt sprint, all entries have Colonial starts or none at all, except one.
2. Wickedwithbourbon | Curtis gets the mount on an experienced filly returning to the dirt and who has run well in deep fields. Dropping in class will help. |
5. Only Maria | McMahon’s filly improved her placing in an off-track debut, sloppy on surface and in style. Cleans things up today. |
1. Boost | Robbie Bailes is having a solid meet and debuts a Mendelsohn filly that could be meddling with the placings of previous starters. |
RACE 2
In a two-turn turf mile, a popular condition for $50k claimers, “nonwinners of three or three-years-old” drew a short but balanced field.
2. Mr Flowers | Ness saddles the top two favorites, but use the one with the longer ML odds who won here in his last start, returning Sanchez. |
5. Quizler | Breen who is perfect at Colonial, (much obllged, Claiming Crown) has a stakes starting colt running at his best right now. |
7. Can Group | The Ness four-year-old that once ran in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf also has stakes starts and is coming back into form. |
RACE 3
Munoz starts a clear favorite among $12.5k conditional claimers in dirt sprint for females. The short field makes her more attractive.
6. Cameo | Trejos is back aboard and won’t likely win by 11 lengths again, but will likely find the lead comfortably. Won’t be near 7-1 today. |
2. Lost River | Others could change tactics, but the only one that may go with Cameo today is Flores’ filly who also has a win in this meet. |
4. Bugged Out | Gallegos returns his three-year-old back to the dirt for the first time in ten starts. Her synthetic speed may not show up on the dirt. |
RACE 4
In a $70k MSW turf sprint, two-year-olds, many in the field have seen each other perform well here at Colonial, but first-timers get ML respect.
7. Richeztoo | Duffy’s Shancelot gelding ran well in deep fields in his first two starts that were pulled off the turf. Should run better on his intended surface. |
1. Supreme Good | McPeek cross entered his colt at Saratoga but choose to run here and back on the turf. Was in the It’s Our Time race so disregard margins. |
4. Bala de Plata | Ness starts a first timer with Sanchez aboard, well-bred for the turf and seeing some maintenance works at Parx. |
RACE 5
One time winners fill a $30k claiming race going 5 1/2 furlongs on the turf with no clear standout but several that look better than others.
2. El Tinmarin | Lusk gets Concepcion aboard hoping that will make the difference between first and second, which he has earned twice this meet. |
1. Jus Too Fly | Trombetta’s Justify gelding broke his maiden last summer on the Saratoga turf and then tried routes. Back to a shorter distance today. |
4. Captain Eddie | Lightner’s gelding has been switching surfaces to find a win eventually on synthetic, but has shown the ability to run on turf as well. |
RACE 6
Virginia-restricted females go 5 1/2 furlongs in a turf sprint for $16k claimers that have never won twice. Many starts among the fillies in the field.
3. Diane Lee | Narrowing the condition to VA-restricted may be just enough for Boyce to break through with Milosevic’s filly who has been second twice. |
6. Respect the Law | Sillaman’s Tiz the Law filly loves to be on the lead at Colonial where its worked for him before. Will benefit cutting back. |
8. Granuaile | It’s tough to repeat at Colonial but that doesn’t mean a poor showing comes after a win. Corrales’ four-year-old earns claiming checks. |
RACE 7
Three in this field of “nonwinners of two other than” won in their last start, all at a turf mile, like today, and all at Colonial.
5. Naptown | The most impressive of those wins was Ruiz under three weeks ago and returns to ride looking for his fourth straight win when aboard. |
8. Lazlo | Other than a Del Mar stakes and his debut at Kentucky Downs, Sillaman’s gelding has made the board, which he has done since the claim. |
4. Primed to Go | Concepcion picks up one of Lopez’s favorite mounts on a More Than Ready colt that consistent runs well and should do so again today. |
RACE 8
Virginia-restricted females go 1 1/16 miles on the turf in a “nonwinners of one other than” allowance, five winning their last start.
9. Miss Authentic | Kenneally is happy to return Curtis to ride his $300k purchase of Twin Oaks transitioning to the turf after breaking her maiden at Colonial. |
8. Amie’s Symphony | Trombetta regrouped after the sophomore campaign of his filly and has been rewarded with two solid turf outings, her last one a win. |
4. Good Accelebrate | Gary Williams sought turf and Virginia-restricted for his mare who has benefitted from whether she has run on it or not. |
