Mid-Atlantic three stars: August 18, 2025
Plenty of racing action took place throughout the Mid-Atlantic this past week.
Here’s a look at the “three stars” of each track:
REGION’S BEST

FIRST STAR: SURFACE TO AIR. Fresh off his upset win in the July 19 Monmouth Park, Surface to Air sprung another surprise on Saturday at Monmouth when he captured the Philip Iselin Stakes by three-quarters of a length. Much like in the Monmouth Cup when he defeated Just a Touch, Surface to Air had to deal with another well-regarded Brad Cox-trained rival in First Mission. He rated off the pace in third up the backstretch, then made his move on the final turn and kicked past First Mission. That rival continued on in the stretch, but Surface to Air had more to give and held on, covering 1 1/16 miles in 1.44.47. He’s now earned 682,054 in his 11-race career, with over 405,000 of that earned this year. He’s owned by Premier Stable, trained by Panagiotis Synnefias, and ridden by Samuel Marin.
SECOND STAR: MISSION NORTH. Maryland and Virginia-restricted grass runners took center stage at Colonial Downs in Saturday’s Find Stakes. Gigante went off as the even-money choice in the five-horse field, but proved no match for Maryland-bred Mission North. The Jack Fisher trainee broke through for his first stakes victory on the flat, winning by a half-length after enjoying a great trip from just off the pace. He improved to 4-for-5 on the year, with his wins including the Speedy Smithwick Memorial Stakes over fences at Great Meadow in May. He’s a homebred for Northwoods Stable ridden by Forest Boyce.
THIRD STAR: DAZZLING DAME. Six 2-year-old fillies traveled one mile in Sunday’s Sorority Stakes at Monmouth Park. Dazzling Dame, who broke her maiden at 5 1/2 furlongs on debut at Laurel Park in June, handled the extra distance of the Sorority with ease, winning by two lengths in gate-to-wire style. She broke on top from the inside under Jevian Toledo and never relinquished the lead, although runner-up Spitfire cut into the margin somewhat late. Dazzling Dame improved to 2-for-2 lifetime, with earnings of 87,000. She was bred in Maryland by Maria Haire and is owned by Respect the Valleys, LLC and trained by Brittany Russell.
COLONIAL DOWNS
