Jockey Sara Del Fabbro injured, fundraiser launched
Sara Del Fabbro, an apprentice jockey from Bergamo, Italy, earned her first U.S. win earlier this year but is now sidelined following a training accident. Friend and fellow rider Matilda Burnham has organized a fundraiser to help with her recovery expenses.
While training at Delaware Park, Del Fabbro suffered a broken leg when a horse flipped during morning exercise, according to the GoFundMe page. She is expected to need six to eight months to recover and plans to spend much of that time with family in Italy.
“Her fun loving spirit and kindness will be missed and we can’t wait to have her return,” Burnham wrote.
Del Fabbro came to the United States in late 2024 after riding successfully in Italy and England. She picked up her first U.S. victory on February 16, 2025, at Laurel Park, guiding Ifeelbadforyouson to an 8¼-length win in a $12,500 maiden claiming race. That milestone came after 17 starts without a win in America.
With Laurel closed for the summer, Del Fabbro had shifted her tack to Delaware Park. She has won with eight of 79 starters there, good for a tie for 12th during the 2025 meet.
Matilda Burnham launched the GoFundMe campaign “Aid Sara Del Fabbros recovery” on August 7, 2025. As of now, the fundraiser has collected $2,701 from 15 donors.
Those wishing to support Del Fabbro can donate through the GoFundMe page.
