Mid-Atlantic three stars: August 4, 2025

Plenty of racing action took place throughout the Mid-Atlantic this past week.

Here’s a look at the “three stars” of each track:

REGION’S BEST

FIRST STAR: LOVE APPEALS. A field of six filly and mare sprinters met at Monmouth Park on Sunday for the Incredible Revenge Stakes at 5 ½ furlongs on grass. Last year’s winner, Love Appeals, repeated by a length for her first stakes win of the year. She rated in third in the early stages off leaders Etrurian and Quiet Confidence, then pounced entering the stretch and kicked on in the stretch. Everyone was in the mix late- the six were separated by only 2 ¼ lengths on the wire- but Love Appeals had the best late punch and won clear. It was her third career stakes win, and first win of the season in two starts, with her previous effort a fourth-place finish in Aqueduct’s License Fee Stakes in May. She’s a Kentucky-bred homebred trained by Miguel Clement and ridden by Samy Camacho. She ran the distance on a firm course in perfect weather conditions in 1.02.62.

SECOND STAR: HEY NAY NAY. The previous day at Monmouth, 2-year-olds traveled five furlongs on the lawn in the Tyro Stakes. John Sadler shipped Hey Nay Nay from California for the race, and it proved a worthwhile trip. The Irish-bred son of No Nay Never broke on top and never looked back, cruising under the wire by seven lengths to improve to 2-for-2 lifetime. He ran the distance on a firm surface in 56.87 seconds, and is fancied by his trainer, John Sadler, as a contender for the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint. He’s owned by Hronis Racing LLC and Iapetus Racing LLC and ridden by Paco Lopez.

THIRD STAR: JUST PHILTORED. Top Maryland broodmare Slow and Steady added to her legacy on Saturday at Colonial Downs. Her 2-year-old daughter Just Philtored picked up her first stakes victory in the 5 ½-furlong Keswick Stakes. Off an impressive maiden win at Laurel Park in late May, she went off as the slight 11-10 favorite, just ahead of Slewpersitious, also coming off a sharp maiden victory on Colonial’s opening day. Just Philtored rated off the early pace, opened up a two-length lead in the stretch, and held off Slewperstitious’ late challenge to win by a neck. She’s now 2-for-2 lifetime and became Slow and Steady’s fourth stakes winner. She’s also less than $8,000 shy of becoming her dam’s eighth six-figure earner. She’s by Northview’s Great Notion, was bred by ZWP Stable and Non Stop Stable, and is owned by Red White and Blue Racing LLC and London Reid Thoroughbreds, trained by Mike Trombetta, and was ridden by Mychel Sanchez.
