Jock Tyler Conner injured in Colonial spill
A bad spill today at Colonial Downs sent jockey Tyler Conner to the hospital and led to the cancellation of the remainder of the racing card following the day’s seventh race.
In the seventh, a $70,000 maiden special weight contest, Conner was aboard Stanza, a three-year-old gelding trained and owned by Lizzie Merryman. Leaving the far turn in the 5 ½-furlong contest, Conner and his mount were advancing in the two path, according to the official Equibase chart.
But Montador, ridden by Francisco Arrieta and to Stanza’s inside, angled out for racing room in front of Stanza, causing him to stumble and fall, unseating Conner.

Stanza “was shut off by Montador when that rival angled out causing horse to stumble and fall,” according to the chart. Montador, first past the post, was disqualified and placed last.
Stanza was able to rise and leave the course under his own steam, an eyewitness said. Conner was placed on a backboard and transported via helicopter to the VCU Medical Center hospital in Richmond.
Conner’s agent, Paula Bacon, subsequently texted Horse Racing Nation’s Ed DeRosa that Conner “was in really good spirits, and all the feeling [in his legs] is coming back,” DeRosa said on X, formerly Twitter. The current diagnosis is that Conner has a broken C1 vertebrae, recovery from which can take eight to 12 weeks, and a broken nose.
Following the race, Churchill Downs, Inc., which owns Colonial, canceled the remainder of the card “in support of the jockey colony at Colonial Downs,” the company said.
Conner, who began riding in 2014, has won 1,271 races while generating purse earnings of over $29 million.
