DEL: Mystic Lake romps in Dashing Beauty
Mystic Lake could be headed back to Charles Town later this summer. But first, she had some business to take care of in Delaware.
Mystic Lake, a two-time Grade 2 winner, made her first appearance in the First State a winning one Thursday, galloping to a 5 ¾-length victory in the six-furlong, $125,000 Dashing Beauty Stakes for older fillies and mares at Delaware Park.
The victory, against just two rivals, was just as easy as the margin implied. Perhaps even easier.
“She’s a nice filly,” said winning rider Jorge Ruiz, aboard for the first time. “She broke good, only waited for the other fillies. Easy win: she’s too much.”
Mystic Lake, a daughter of Mo Town, broke on top and led early while Ruiz kept her under a hold. She led narrowly from the rail-running Safe Trust after an opening quarter-mile in a dawdling 23.19 seconds.

The margin had increased to a length after a half-mile in 46 seconds flat, and Safe Trust was soon done. Mystic Lake widened readily without real encouragement, stopping the timer in 1:10.37 for six furlongs on a fast main track.
M J’s Yoshida, off at 12-1, picked up second, almost three lengths ahead of Safe Trust. Admiral Hopper, Girls Weekend, and St. Benedicts Prep were scratched.
The scratches pretty much left the remaining runners at Mystic Lake’s mercy: lone speed in a short field. And she did nothing to disappoint.
All trainer Saffie Joseph, Jr. told him, Ruiz said, was, “Just break. She is the best.”
The win was Mystic Lake’s ninth from 18 career outings. The winner’s share of the purse pushed her to the precipice of $1.2 million in career earnings.
Mystic Lake has won three graded races, two last year. She owns wins in the Grade 3 Miss Preakness at Pimlico, the Grade 2 Charles Town Oaks, and Grade 2 Inside Information at Gulfstream.
She was a decent fourth in the Grade 1 Madison in April, but after a disappointing outing when ninth in the Grade 1 Derby City Distaff in May, Joseph dropped her into easier spots. She easily won the Memorial Day Sprint at Lone Star Park at odds of 3-5, and her win today came at odds of 1-20.
Mystic Lake paid $2.10 to win. There was no place, show, exacta, or trifecta wagering.
Mystic Lake’s next start could come in the $250,000 Misty Bennett Pink Ribbon Stakes at 7 furlongs on the Charles Town Classic undercard Aug. 22. She is owned by C2 Racing Stable LLC, Stefania Farms LLC, and BAG Racing Stables LLC.
