Zulu Kingdom looks for third straight in Penn Mile
After two weather-related delays, the Grade 3 Penn Mile, the signature race of the Penn National season, finally gets its moment Friday evening as Race 6 on an 11-race card. First post is 5:00 p.m., and a competitive field of 3-year-olds will line up for the $400,000 turf test, which was originally slated for May 30.
Topping the field is Zulu Kingdom (post 7), a multiple graded stakes winner trained by Chad Brown. The Irish-bred Ten Sovereigns colt has won five of six lifetime starts, including his most recent triumph in the Grade 1 American Turf on Kentucky Derby Day. That day, he unleashed a powerful move to edge clear late, a performance that stamped him as a serious player in the 3-year-old turf division. Flavien Prat returns to ride, and despite the wide post, Zulu Kingdom looms large as the 7-5 morning-line favorite.
Trainer Mark Casse sends out a pair of contenders, both of whom figure prominently. Mi Bago leaves from post four as the 7-2 second choice on the morning line and owns a stakes win at this one-mile trip. In his most recent turf outing, he led a long way in the American Turf before tiring to fourth. A five-time winner already, Mi Bago is likely to show speed again under Irad Ortiz Jr., and his past success at the mile distance makes him dangerous.

Casse’s other runner, Dream On (post 8, 9-2), scored a sharp win in the Woodhaven Stakes at Aqueduct in April, tracking the pace inside before finishing strongly in the final 70 yards. He defeated Cairo Caper that day and has faced top company before, including a third in last year’s Grade 1 Summer Stakes. With Javier Castellano aboard, he could be peaking at the right time.
A live longshot could be Out On Bail (post 5, 6-1), who stretches out beyond 5 1/2 furlongs for the first time after a strong second in the William Walker Stakes at Churchill. The Tiz the Law colt has never been out of the money in seven starts and could offer value if he handles the distance. Trained by Michael Maker, he’ll have Manny Franco in the irons.
Barbadian Runner (post 2, 10-1) finished a good second in the $200,000 Delaware Derby on dirt just two weeks ago. A three-time stakes winner, he’s a versatile type who could thrive on the turf with a stalking trip under Forest Boyce. The Henry Walters trainee’s most recent turf outing came in the James W. Murphy Stakes on the Preakness undercard at Pimlico in which he finished fourth.
From the rail, States’ Rights (post 1, 8-1) draws top rider Jose Ortiz for trainer Cherie DeVaux. Though still eligible for a first-level allowance, he’s run consistently well, including a near-miss second at Keeneland in April. His rail draw could allow for a ground-saving trip.
Rounding out the field are Cairo Caper (post 6, 15-1) and Panagiotis (post 3, 30-1). The former, trained by Phil Schoenthal, most recently finished seventh, albeit beaten less than two lengths, behind Dream On in the Woodhaven and does own a stakes win sprinting. The latter, a local hopeful for trainer Dimitrios Syneffias, has two wins from four starts but has never tried the turf before.
Zulu Kingdom appears to be the one to beat in this delayed contest. But challengers like Mi Bago and Dream On are ready to pounce in the Friday feature.
Supporting the Penn Mile are the $150,000 Penn Oaks and a pair of turf stakes for state-breds, the Alphabet Soup and the Lyphard.
