Dozen wins net Mychel Sanchez Jock of the Week
Riding between Parx, Delaware Park and Laurel Park, Mychel Sanchez recorded 12 victories from 34 mounts including two four-win days earning Jockey of the Week honors for June 16 through June 22 by the panel of racing experts.
The weekly honor recognizes jockeys for significant riding accomplishments and who are members of the Jockeys’ Guild, the organization which represents more than 1050 active, retired and permanently disabled jockeys in the United States.
Sanchez began the week as usual riding at Parx on Monday recording a win in the third race aboard Real Blues for trainer Jamie Ness. The jockey/trainer duo of Sanchez and Ness currently boast a win percentage of 28%. Sanchez then added to that win in the fifth race for trainer Michael Pino piloting We Ready. The win percentage of the jockey/trainer duo of Sanchez and Pino is an impressive 43%.
Riding on Tuesday at Parx, Sanchez had a four-win day beginning in the fourth race for trainer Irving Rodriguez aboard Cindy’s Song. Sanchez visited the winner’s circle in the next race with Normandy Hero for trainer Jamie Ness. Ness again gave a leg up to Sanchez on Speedyness in the seventh race as well as the eighth race on True Phenomenon.
On Wednesday’s card at Parx, Sanchez recorded another four-win day beginning with the first race for trainer Robert Mosco aboard Problems Abound. Riding for trainer Horacio De Paz, Sanchez won the second race with Wrap and Send. He won the fourth race on Mended We Stand for trainer Michael Pino and capped the day with a win for trainer Guadalupe Preciado in race seven aboard Smile Maker.
Sanchez moved on to ride at Delaware Park on Thursday then to Laurel Park on Friday where he picked up a win in the first race for trainer Michael Trombetta aboard Suremeanttoobe.
Staying at Laurel for Saturday’s card, Sanchez won the seventh race with Cadet Corps for trainer Kelly Breen. Sanchez took a break and rested on Sunday.
The multiple graded stakes-winning Sanchez, 29, is a native of Venezuela where his father, uncle and brother were jockeys. He began riding in the U.S. in 2013 and has won multiple leading rider titles at Parx. He currently sits in first place at Parx with a 38-win advantage over Paco Lopez. Sanchez is tied for fourth with Jaime Rodriguez in the current Laurel Park standings.
Sanchez typically rides at the Colonial Downs summer meet which begins Wednesday, July 9.
Other contenders for Jockey of the Week included Juan J. Hernandez with a stakes win at opening weekend of the Los Alamitos Thoroughbred meet, Paco Lopez who also recorded 12 wins for the week, Irad Ortiz, Jr. with a stakes win at Belmont at the Big A and a graded stakes win at Churchill Downs and Joe Ramos who won the Gr. III Ohio Derby at Thistledown.
