“Warrior” Bosserati tackles Alla Breve in Jameela
Trainer Brittany Russell’s barn has had plenty of big moments in recent years.
One horse that – in some ways unexpectedly – keeps turning up in the middle of them is Bosserati.
The Maryland-bred Holy Boss mare will make her next start in Saturday’s Maryland- and Virginia-restricted Jameela Stakes going six furlongs on the grass. The 5-2 second choice, she’ll tangle with last year’s Jameela winner in Alla Breve, the 2-1 favorite.
A winner in six of 19 starts with earnings past $330,000, Bosserati owns three stakes wins. Those came in the 2023 Stormy Blues, last year’s Maryland Million Turf Sprint against the boys, and last month’s The Very One at Pimlico. Those latter two have loomed large in Russell’s mind.
Of the Maryland Million win: “Pretty huge,” Russell said afterwards.
And then there was The Very One. That came on what previously had been a difficult day for Russell on the Black-Eyed Susan undercard. Two of her runners had been scratched at the gate, one after dumping rider Sheldon Russell, Brittany’s husband, and running off. Sheldon took off the rest of his mounts.

But in The Very One, Bosserati sped to the front and fended off repeated challenges from Accomplished Girl to win by a head.
“I mean, I’m not sure I want to remember this day,” Russell said in the winner’s circle later. “I’ll remember that Bosserati was there for me.”
Bosserati, a homebred for Joel Politi, has been in the Russell barn since day one. She broke her maiden at first asking on the main track, but that was her only win on dirt. After six increasingly poor efforts, Russell gave her a little time off and brought her back on the turf – where she’s remained ever since.
Bosserati is 5-for-12 on the grass with three other placings.
“It’s kind of cool because we’ve had her from the beginning, and those horses are just a little bit more special to everyone in the barn,” Russell said in a release. “She’s our warrior. Everyone’s excited about her.”
Bosserati’s wins have all been at 5 or 5 ½ furlongs. Her lone prior try at six – in last year’s Jameela – saw her lead a long way before finishing third, beaten a neck.
“You just have to see how it plays out,” Russell explained. “You know she’s going to go, and it’s just going to be a question of whether she can settle enough early to have something to finish up with. I think it’s definitely in her wheelhouse. It’s just going to have to go the right way.”
Sheldon Russell has the mount.
The horse that beat Bosserati in last year’s Jameela, Runnymoore Racing’s Alla Breve, will make her season bow in this year’s edition.
“She’s a nice filly,” said trainer Matz. “We gave her a nice break over the winter. We were hoping to get a race into her before this, but it just didn’t happen. She’s been training well, but you know how it is after a layoff. You don’t know what they’re going to do, but we hope she shows up. [The Jameela] looked like it was a nice place to start.”
Alla Breve is 5-for-12 in her career with earnings of nearly $210,000.
In the Jameela, she’ll be reunited with jockey Horacio Karamanos. That duo has hooked up five times, winning four of them, including all three of their outings last year.
Last year’s Jameela runner-up, Hollywood Walk, most recently third in the License Fee at Aqueduct May 4, also returns here. Mychel Sanchez will ride for trainer Mike Trombetta.
