Delaware: R Disaster scores in Rehoboth
R Disaster made her stakes breakthrough on Saturday at Delaware Park, powering home to win the $100,000 Rehoboth Stakes with authority. Trained by Saffie Joseph Jr. for owners Averill Racing LLC, Two Eight Racing, and Anthony Mattera, the 4-year-old filly secured her first stakes win after finishing second in back-to-back Grade 3 sprints earlier this year.
Breaking from post 3 under Jorge Ruiz, R Disaster tracked the early pace from the three path as Miss Harriett carved out opening fractions of 21.92 and 44.50. Moving smoothly to the attack, the daughter of Awesome Slew swept to the lead by the top of the lane and drew off under steady urging to win by 6½ lengths, stopping the clock in 1:09.83 for six furlongs on a fast main track.

“At the 3/8ths pole, I had a lot of horse in my hands,” said winning jockey Jorge Ruiz. “She was strong and she just got stronger. I knew at that point, she was going to be really tough. She was super today.”
Miss Harriett held gamely for second after setting the pace along the inside while taking pressure, and Drifaros was up for third.
The win improved R Disaster’s record to 5 wins and 4 seconds from 9 starts, with earnings now exceeding $320,000.
R Disaster paid $3.00 to win as the odds-on favorite. The exacta returned $9.00 for a one-dollar wager. Alani, Pleasant Embrace, and Reagan’s Flame rounded out the order of finish.
Socially Selective, St. Benedicts Prep, and Sunday Girl were scratched.
Bred in Florida by Ocala Stud and J. Michael O’Farrell Jr., R Disaster continues to prove her consistency and class, and her Rehoboth triumph may open the door to more opportunities this summer.
The Rehoboth initially was to be one of two stakes on the card, but because of persistently rainy weather, the grassy Cape Henlopen was postponed to June 14.
