Wide-open group set for Penn Oaks

A wide open field of nine sophomore fillies will contest Friday’s $150,000 Penn Oaks at Hollywood Casino at Penn National Race Course.

Headlining the group is Candy Quest (3-1, owned by Glassman Racing), who exits a solid fourth-place finish in the Memories of Silver Stakes at Aqueduct. Trained by Mark Casse and to be ridden by Javier Castellano, the daughter of Connect boasts a consistent résumé with two wins and a stakes placing from five starts. She was second in the $158,000 Sanibel Island Stakes at Gulfstream earlier this spring, and her tactical style could prove ideal from the rail draw.

Also entered is Love You Anyway (4-1, Bregman Family Racing LLC), a fast-rising Tapit filly trained by George R. Arnold II. She dominated a maiden special weight at Keeneland last out, surging clear by 2¾ lengths. With Jose Ortiz aboard, she’ll try stakes company for the second time – she was fifth in the Grade 3 Florida Oaks prior to breaking her maiden — while looking to replicate her sharp closing kick.

From across the Atlantic comes Bessie Abott (5-1, Team Valor International LLC & Gary Barber), an Irish-bred by Kuroshio also trained by Mark Casse. After a near-miss second in a tough Keeneland allowance, she looms a serious player under Juan Hernandez.

Warming (8-1, Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners) will look to rebound from a troubled fifth in the six-furlong Take the A Train Stakes at Aqueduct. Trained by H. Graham Motion, she broke her maiden impressively in New York last summer and retains the services of jockey Manny Franco. With just two starts under her belt, she has plenty of upside.

Midway Memories (6-1, First Row Partners & Estate of Brereton C. Jones), from the Chad Brown barn, steps up after a maiden score in New York. The Cairo Prince filly, to be ridden by Irad Ortiz Jr., overcame traffic and surged late to win by a length and could make noise if she takes a step forward – and possibly at a surprisingly high price for a Chad Brown runner.

Accent (6-1, Jeffrey Drown), a British-bred daughter of Pinatubo, is a stablemate to Midway Memories. She broke her maiden on debut at Tampa Bay Downs with a neck score. With Flavien Prat in the irons, she represents an intriguing unknown with plenty of upside and strong European bloodlines.

Admit (6-1, Claiborne Farm) tries turf for the first time following a pair of stakes placings on the synthetic at Turfway and a recent try in the Grade 1 Ashland on dirt. By Blame and out of a War Front mare, she is bred for the grass and could make a major impact under Lanfranco Dettori for trainer Tom Drury Jr.

Serene Spirit (12-1) and Pure Majestic (20-1) round out the field.

Post time for the Penn Oaks is scheduled for 7:10 p.m. ET, serving as a key lead-in to the $400,000 Grade 3 Penn Mile.
