Fasig-Tipton 2yo sale tops $44 million, sets record
Spearheaded by four seven-figure horses, Tuesday’s Fasig-Tipton Midlantic two-year-olds in training sale overcame difficult headwinds to top last year and set a record for this sale, zooming past $44 million in gross sales.
Despite a series of misfortunes that forced the company to compress a two-day sale into one, the company sold 326 horses that brought a record total of $44,192,500. That was up 34.2% from last year’s total of more than $32.9 million and even surpassed the 2022 record of just shy of $37.3 million.
The figures are pending any post-sale transactions, which were not immediately available. In 2024, an additional 15 horses sold post-sale and were included in the gross numbers.
It was an impressive bounceback following a difficult prior week. Three days of breezes had initially been scheduled for May 13-15. But the breezes were pushed back a day by rain, and on the second day of the rescheduled show, a horse suffered a fatal injury, at which point another intense storm followed.
The company shifted the breeze show to “gallop only” without timing the horses. It also was forced to backload many of the gallopers to Sunday, which resulted in an all-day session.

Finally, Fasig-Tipton compressed the sale itself, originally slated to be conducted Monday and Tuesday, to a single day. That, too, resulted in a long day. It began at 10:00 a.m. and ended at 10:06 p.m.
All told the 326 horses that did sell averaged $135,560, a 42% jump from a year ago. The median rose from $50,000 last year to $60,000 this year.
The only negative among the top line numbers was the buyback rate, which ticked up to 24.2%, as 104 horses that went through the ring did not sell. That was an increase from last year’s 16.7% buyback rate.
Hip 368, a Girvin filly consigned by Wavertree Stables as agent, led the sale, bringing a top bid of $1.1 million. The dark bay or brown filly went to Kerri Radcliffe and Alex Elliott as agent. One of those to breeze, she zipped an eighth in a bullet 10 1/5 seconds. She is out of the winning Broken Vow mare Scarlet Dixie.
Wavertree also consigned Hip 79, a chestnut Nyquist colt who brought $1 million from Mayberry Farm. Out of the unraced Giant’s Causeway mare Déjà vu, he is a half-brother to the stakes-winning and Grade 1-placed Crystal Ball, by Malibu Moon. He is also from the female family of Grade 1 winners Madcap Escapade and Dubai Escapade. He worked a furlong in 10 2/5 seconds.
Hip 544 slotted between the two Wavertree sales, generating a top bid of $1.05 million. Consigned by Top Line Sales as agent and purchased by Donato Lanni as agent, the chestnut colt was one of those who only galloped and did not post a timed work. He is a son of Violence out of the unraced Street Boss mare A Taste of Red, a family that has copious black type under second dam Rare Opportunity.
Hip 334 rounded out the leaderboard, earning a top bid of $1 million. Consigned by Kings Equine as agent, the ticket was signed by Mahmoud Mouni. A bay colt, he is a son of Into Mischief out of the stakes-winning Speightstown mare Quick Flip and is a half-brother to the Grade 2 winner Following Sea and three other stakes horses. He breezed in 10 1/5 seconds for an eighth of a mile.
Two other horses – hips 55 and 137 – topped out at $975,000.
