Journalism to run in Preakness
Journalism, the Kentucky Derby runner-up and one of the nation’s most consistent 3-year-olds, will continue his Triple Crown campaign in the 150th Preakness Stakes at Pimlico Race Course.
Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners announced via X.com post Sunday that the colt has been thriving since his Derby effort and has been officially cleared by trainer Michael McCarthy to target the historic middle jewel. Umberto Rispoli will retain the mount.
“Journalism has been grand since the Kentucky Derby and [trainer Michael McCarthy] has green-lighted him to head to Pimlico for the 150th Preakness Stakes! We look forward to showcasing Journalism’s talents in Baltimore in such a coveted American Classic with Umberto Rispoli set to ride,” Eclipse said in a post.
A $825,000 yearling purchase, Journalism finished second as the post-time favorite in the Kentucky Derby, where he was narrowly defeated by Sovereignty, who will bypass the Preakness. That runner-up finish came on the heels of a four-race winning streak, including a signature victory in the Grade 1 Santa Anita Derby. He now boasts a record of four wins from six career starts and earnings in excess of $1.6 million.

By two-time Horse of the Year Curlin and out of the graded stakes-winning Uncle Mo mare Mopotism, Journalism brings elite pedigree, top-level experience, and strong form into the Preakness, where he is expected to be the favorite.
Other Derby runners in the Middle Jewel look to be American Promise and Sandman.
