CT: Moonlit Notion favored in Coin Collector
A field of six West Virginia-bred 3-year-olds will sprint 4 1/2 furlongs in Saturday evening’s $75,000 Coin Collector Stakes at Charles Town Races. As race 8 on a nine-race card, the event features a clash of proven stakes horses and rising stars, with a perfect record on the line for the morning line favorite.
Undefeated Moonlit Notion (1-1) puts his flawless 5-for-5 record on the line as he makes his stakes debut for trainer Tim Grams and owner Grams Racing Stable LLC. The gray/roan colt by Great Notion has been dominant against allowance company and was most recently a 2 1/2-length winner on April 18. With all five of his wins coming at Charles Town, Moonlit Notion will be ridden again by Larry Reynolds. Bred by Tim and Judy Grams, he has shown versatility at multiple distances and appears primed for the spotlight.

Annapolis Road (9-5) returns from a long layoff and looks to pick up where he left off after winning the $75,000 WVBC Vincent Moscarelli Memorial Stakes in October. Trained by Jeff Runco for owner-breeder Coleswood Farm Inc., this dark bay gelding by Outwork has won two of three career starts and has never gone off at higher than 1-2, a streak likely to end here. He’ll have leading Charles Town rider Arnaldo Bocachica in the irons as he tries to defend his status as one of the state’s best.
Im the Director (8-1) is the field’s most experienced runner with 10 starts, including two stakes victories in the Henry Mercer Memorial and West Virginia Futurity. Though he faltered last time out when finishing fifth on April 18, the gray/roan gelding remains dangerous for trainer Cynthia McKee and owner Beau Ridge Farm LLC. With $135,287 in earnings, he’s the richest horse in the field and will be ridden by Marshall Mendez as he seeks to recapture his best form.
Lightly raced Midnight Mesa (6-1) was a sharp debut winner back in February, rallying to a 4 1/2-length maiden score. The son of Sky Mesa has since been working steadily for trainer Javier Contreras and owner Raymond J. Funkhouser III. Reshawn Latchman retains the mount on the O’Sullivan Farms-bred colt, who has plenty of upside and could be a major player if he handles the jump into stakes company.
After a long layoff, Dadsnumbronehelpr (12-1) returned on May 2 and crossed the wire fourth before being disqualified for interference. Trained by Kristy Petty for KP Racing Stables LLC and bred by John A. Casey, the gelded son of Juba is a full brother to multiple stakes winner Jubawithatwist and a half to another multiple stakes winner in Teachintherelease. Jockey Gustavo Larrosa will be aboard as the gray/roan tries to build on a useful seasonal debut. His juvenile form includes a fifth-place finish in the Hickory Tree Stakes at Colonial Downs.
Rounding out the field is Ray of Sunshine (15-1), another from the Contreras barn, owned by John C. Funkhouser. This chestnut colt won on debut but struggled in his last start after being squeezed back early and losing position. He gets another shot under jockey Juan Nunez and will look to rebound after that troubled trip. Bred in Virginia by O’Sullivan Farms LLC and Eric Steinmann, the son of Golden Years will need to take a step forward to contend.
With seasoned stakes winners, unbeaten talent, and intriguing comeback stories, the Coin Collector Stakes is shaping up to be an exciting sprint at Charles Town.
