Grande scratched from Kentucky Derby
Repole Stable’s Grande has been scratched from Kentucky Derby 151 due to a foot bruise, according to trainer Todd Pletcher.
Grande, the second-place finisher in the Wood Memorial, was 20-1 on the morning line and was to be ridden by John Velazquez. A Curlin colt who cost $300,000 as a yearling, he had won his first two starts before finishing second by 3 ½ lengths to Rodriguez in the major New York Derby prep.
With the scratch of Rodriguez yesterday, no Wood Memorial runner will compete in this year’s Kentucky Derby.
Grande had been suffering from a slight cracked heel, which had improved through the week, according to owner Mike Repole. But despite what he claimed were clean diagnostics, the regulatory veterinarians informed the connections that the horse would be scratched.
According to owner Repole’s Repole Stable account on X, formerly Twitter, Grande’s connections were “baffled and confused by what criteria vets are using to determine who scratches, who doesn’t and when… especially when every diagnostic tells us the horse is safe and sound.”
The scratch leaves a field of 19 to contest the Derby.
