What we’re watching at Laurel Park this weekend

Laurel Park hosts three days of live racing this coming weekend, with post time at 12:10 each day. Now with grass season in full swing, big fields are in abundance.

Here’s what we’ll be watching for this weekend:

Friday, April 25

Rio Chama will line up in Race 10, a $49,000 allowance sprint at 5½ furlongs on turf. This 3-year-old chestnut gelding, trained by Michael Stidham and ridden by Jeiron Barbosa, represents Godolphin, LLC. A half-brother to Grade 1 winner Secret Spice, Rio Chama has faced stiff competition recently at Oaklawn Park, including a race against Kentucky Derby contender Sandman. The turf and a return to Laurel may provide the boost he needs.

Saturday, April 26

Jurisprudence makes his debut in Race 1, a maiden special weight at 1 mile on turf. This 4-year-old bay gelding is trained by top national conditioner Chad Brown and will be ridden by Jevian Toledo for Klaravich Stables, Inc.. By Constitution and a half-brother to the stakes winner Encoder, Jurisprudence has an elite pedigree. Brown has only started three maidens at Laurel in the past five years (without a win), so caution is encouraged here as a wagering matter.

Haileysfirstnotion runs in Race 9, a $53,000 allowance at 6 furlongs. Trained by Gary Capuano and ridden by Jean Briceno, the 4-year-old dark bay or brown gelding is looking for his fourth win in six career starts. He’s making his third start off the bench and has already earned nearly $100,000. He’ll have to fend off Play Harder, a stakes winner returning from a layoff, in what could be a fast and contentious race.

Royal Wintour returns to action in Race 10, a $49,000 allowance at 1 mile on turf. This 4-year-old bay filly, trained by Graham Motion and ridden by Jorge Ruiz for Newstead Stables LLC, hasn’t raced since a disappointing run in the Hilltop Stakes on Preakness Day 2024. Prior to that, she was narrowly beaten by Style Points, who went on to win the Virginia Oaks. With a trainer-jockey duo that’s winning at a 36% clip at Laurel in 2024-25, Royal Wintour is a serious threat if back to form.

Sunday, April 27

Weekend Wife makes her second career start in Race 7, a Maryland-restricted allowance at 1 mile. Trained by Tim Keefe and ridden by Forest Boyce, this 4-year-old bay filly won her debut over a sloppy track earlier this month. A half-sister to Passion Rules, third in the Wood Memorial, and by the Maryland sire Blofeld, Weekend Wife will look to take the next step in her first try against winners.

Miss Harriett is the headliner in Race 9, a $56,000 allowance at 6 furlongs. A 4-year-old gray/roan filly trained by Brandon McFarlane and ridden by F. Boyce, she makes her first start since September. A 3-time stakes winner, she launched her career in stunning fashion, winning the 2023 Maryland Million Lassie at 63-1. She’s one of three in a six-horse field making a seasonal debut, and if she’s fit, she could be the class of the field.
