Complexity Jane scoots to Weber City Miss upset
The Brittany Russell barn, overflowing with talented horses, has a perhaps unexpected decision to make: whether to point Complexity Jane to the May 16 Grade 2 Black-Eyed Susan Stakes at Pimlico Race Course.
Complexity Jane turned in a good-looking, front-running score in Saturday’s $150,000 Weber City Miss Stakes to punch herself a ticket to Pimlico’s filly feature – if her connections want it.
“I’ll talk to [owner Michael Golden]. We’ll take a look,” Russell said. “I mean, we won’t go just to go. We’ll just have to see how she’s training and go from there.”
Complexity Jane entered the race undefeated – but, as far as the betting public was concerned, pretty much unnoticed. She went off at 8-1, with Safe Trust the 6-5 favorite and Complexity Jane’s stablemate Reply the 2-1 second choice.
Complexity Jane broke alertly from post position four and quickly asserted herself on the lead. Guided to the rail by jockey Jevian Toledo, she dictated a steady early pace, setting fractions of 24.36 for the opening quarter and 48.88 for the half-mile while maintaining her position on the inside. As the field moved into the far turn, Complexity Jane began to open up her advantage, reaching the three-quarter mark in 1:14.01 with a two-length advantage.

“I sure was [comfortable with the early fractions],” Russell said. “It worked out awesome.”
Behind Complexity Jane, Moon Cache overcame a bobble at the start and raced three-wide around the first turn before settling into a forward position in the two-path. Meanwhile, Reply was unhurried early, trailing the field along the rail.
As the leaders began to tire, Reply shifted out into the three-path entering the far turn and then angled back inside turning for home. Near the sixteenth pole, she drifted outward and made contact with Moon Cache, who was also drifting in while attempting to challenge. Despite the bumping, both fillies continued gamely, with Reply closing steadily to nab second by a head, three parts of a length behind the winner.
Moon Cache held on for third, while Safe Trust made a middle move to reach contention after three quarters but faded to sixth. Running time for 1 1/16 miles on a fast main track 1:47.12.
Complexity Jane paid $18.20 to win and topped an exacta that returned $46.90 for a one-dollar wager.
Complexity Jane won her career debut comfortably going six furlongs and rallying off the pace. In her follow-up going a mile, she led a long way before settling for second behind Rosieontheriver. But that runner was disqualified because of a crop violation, elevating Complexity Jane to first. That left Russell unsure of whether the daughter of Complexity was a closing sprinter or a horse who wanted a route of ground.
With two runners in the race, Sheldon Russell, Brittany Russell’s husband and Complexity Jane’s jockey her first two races, took off Complexity Jane to ride Reply, a $450,000 Repole Stable runner who had won her only prior start.
Since that race March 2, Complexity Jane had posted two works, including a zippy half-mile in 48 1/5 seconds April 10 that was third-fastest of 67 at the distance. A conversation with exercise rider Eric Camacho, a winner of nearly 800 races during his time as a jockey, helped point Russell to today’s two-turn contest.
“[Camacho] has done a really good job with her. He worked her last week, and it was a pretty sharp work, and the gallop-out was good. But he came back, and he goes, ‘She got tired,’” Russell recalled.
“I said, ‘I just don’t know if she’ll get the ground,’” she added. “And he goes, ‘I’d try it.’ Thanks, Eric!”
