CT: Rescheduled Original Gold tops Friday card

Friday night’s feature at Charles Town marks the return of stakes action with the $75,000 Original Gold Stakes, a seven-furlong contest rescheduled from April 12 due to a weather-related cancellation. The race, restricted to West Virginia-bred fillies and mares, kicks off the 2025 stakes calendar at Charles Town and drew a competitive field of 10 plus an also-eligible.

Headlining the lineup is Maggie’s Girl (5-2), a two-time stakes winner trained by Tim Grams, who enters in sharp form off a November allowance score. A model of consistency, she’s never missed the trifecta in six starts at this distance and boasts 11 wins from 17 career outings. She’ll break from the rail under Larry Reynolds.

Looking to spoil the party is Lightnin Runner (5-1), the defending champ of this event. With 10 wins and nearly $275,000 in earnings, the Ronney Brown trainee returns with rider Orlando Bocachica aboard. Her affinity for this race and solid resume make her a key player at a possibly attractive price.

One to watch is Mendys Honey (3-1), a daughter of Mendelssohn from the powerful Anthony Farrior barn. She’s won five of seven starts and ships in off a Colonial Downs allowance score. Regular pilot Arnaldo Bocachica retains the mount as she goes for her first stakes triumph.

Also seeking her first stakes win is Juba’s Parade (7-2) for trainer Kristy Petty. A consistent performer with seven wins and solid back numbers, she’s reunited with Antonio Lopez and could be dangerous if she brings her best.

The Sky Is Falling, a veteran six-year-old with over $322,000 in earnings, brings class to the table, but she’ll need to bounce back from an eight-race losing streak — and draw in off the also-eligible list. Meanwhile, Still Grumpy, Ran Out of Trainer, Look Ahead, Somesugarnspice, Shewonttalktome, and Jubaslilballerina all come in as longshots seeking an upset.

When the race originally was scheduled, 14 had entered. Moonlit Kiss, Runaway Beauty, and Xanthe all are not entered this time.

With past champions, emerging contenders, and up-and-comers all converging, the Original Gold Stakes promises a thrilling start to the Charles Town stakes season. The Original Gold is slated as the eighth race on Friday night. Post time for the card is 7:00 p.m.
