Delaware Park picks and analysis: June 5, 2024

Picks and analysis for this evening’s card from Hollywood Casino at Charles Town Races:

  • DATE: June 5, 2024
  • POST TIME: 12:30 p.m.

6. Army CadetRelatively lightly raced type galloped against bottom maidens last out and catches a manageable group here
4. Duke of DoolySpeedster will control the pace, but his history of gacking up leads makes him hard to love on top
5. Sidney’s BidMorning line favorite has run credibly against better recently but has been stuck at this two-life condition for over a year

6. FortheloveofrunPay attention to the toteboard: if any of the first-timers take significant play, give ’em a long look; breeder and former owner McIngvale liked this guy enough to run him twice at Keeneland, and that second-place finish makes him a logical play here
2. It’s HammertimeTrainer Gary Capuano’s overall record with firsters isn’t great, but he’s 2-for-7 with them in special weight company here; dam was a stakes winner, one sib won at first asking, and sire Vekoma off to a quick start
3. Bourbon N LaceTrainer Pecoraro has a pair (this one and #5); two of this one’s sibs won first time out, and top local pilot Rodriguez gets the call

3. Distorted d’OroFirst-timer is out of a Grade 2-placed mare; Stidham barn can get ’em ready to run first out
7. Midnight ProwlerUseful debut when getting within a couple before tiring in the lane at GP, and top runners have run well since; gets blinkers on for this
6. Toy CollectorClement pair (#5 and this one) are super-well-bred; this one cost $550k at auction, and the other is a half to multiple G1 winner Lady Eli;; either could be capable, and if you’re wondering why they’d be here, it might just be that there’s no race for them at Saratoga, leaving ’em on the sidelines until mid-June otherwise

5. Dia de SolMakes this unusual condition — haven’t won in eight months — by about two weeks and no starts since; pretty much an all or nothing horse, since if she can return to last year’s form, she wins here
4. Lantern’s CandyConnex liked this one enough to waive the claiming price in first two off the bench; finds lowest level yet
8. MurumbiArriagada barn with productive start to meet

8. Canny LandPrior two-turn turf try competitive with these; perhaps a useful return to action when running evenly sprinting
3. Woke Up a DivaImproved effort in last and breeding suggests turf try is due
2. MischiefnessEven try versus similar in last

Racing Notes

  • Apprentice riders Ederik Robles (10 wins) and Gabriel Maldonado (9) are atop the jockey standings, along with veteran Jaime Rodriguez, who is 9-for-22. Maldonado went 4-for-11 last week…

6. Awesome RutaNo Sierra Leone or Catching Freedom in this group is good news for this guy
5. DepositionAmbitiously handled sort gets Lasix on in return to non-stakes company
2. Ice the KickerShowed early promise and may be forging back to better form

5. Helms DeepThe Dinner Party was a little bit too much company for this one; prior turf tries compete
10. Two by TwoConsistent sort will be running late and could get pace to run at
3. Bustin UpSpeedy and consistent

10. Alva StarrG1 winner returns to track where she owns two wins; just about any of her last several races wins this one, and while this is clearly not the target, she won’t need to be her very best
1. YesternightWent off the favorite in a G3 at Churchill two back; owns two wins and career-best Beyer fig at the trip
5. Kant Hurry LoveKeeping good company and Delaware native McCarthy comes in for the mount

7. City RageMay try to pop the latches on top and take ’em all the way
6. Loose GooseNot every day that you see a 5yo newly gelded
3. Shackled LoveOnetime stakes winner disappointed in last; Capuano barn off to productive start
