Delaware: Salty group set for Battery Park

Saturday’s $150,000 Battery Park Stakes at Delaware Park has drawn a salty group of older runners, with three graded stakes winners among the horses expected to face the starter.

The 1 1/16-mile test for three-year-olds and up is carded as the seventh race on a 10-race program. Post time for the seventh is 3:42 p.m. Two horses, Warrant and Zabracadabra, are expected to scratch.

Doppelganger (4-1) is likely to go off as the favorite. The Brittany Russell trainee arrives off a subpar outing as a 24-1 longshot in the Grade 1 Metropolitan Handicap on the Belmont Stakes undercard and will need a bounceback effort.

However, he’s more than capable: one race prior, the four-year-old Into Mischief colt had won the Grade 1 Carter at Aqueduct. Overall, he has four wins and nearly $450,000 in earnings from 11 career outings. Jevian Toledo, who has ridden him to victory in three of four outings, has the mount.

Trainer Todd Pletcher will send out Repole Stable’s Fearless (3-1). The seven-year-old Ghostzapper gelding already has more than $1.2 million in the bank and will look to add to it here.

Fearless didn’t run a terrible race when fifth in the Grade 2 True North on Belmont day. Though he was fairly well beaten, that was at a 6 ½-furlong distance that did not figure to be his best. A four-time graded stakes winner, Fearless’ recent victories have all come at route distances, ranging from nine furlongs to 1 ¾ miles, so the added distance offered in this spot should be to his liking.

Kendrick Carmouche is named to ride.

Cash Is King and LC Racing’s Ridin With Biden (6-1) will seek his third win in 2023 and arrives off an allowance triumph at Parx Racing. He earned his top victory in last September’s 1 ½-mile, Grade 3 Greenwood Cup at Parx, while his recent win enabled him to surpass $500,000 in earnings.

After winning the Kris Kringle at Parx to start his ’23 campaign, Ridin With Biden finished last of 12 in the Grade 1 Pegasus World Cup, won by Art Collector. After a break, he bounced back with the recent allowance score.

“Ridin with Biden is doing extremely well,” said trainer Robert “Butch” Reid, Jr. “We gave him a nice break after the Pegasus. That did not work out so well, so we gave him a break and left him in Ocala, Florida, for a couple of months. It really did him well chewing on the grass and soaking up the sun. He showed how much the break benefited him with his comeback race. I am really looking forward to seeing him run on Saturday.”

Paco Lopez, who won three times at Delaware last Saturday, including on the Reid-trained Foggy Night in the Grade 3 Delaware Oaks, has the mount.

Rounding out the field are recent Monmouth allowance winner and 2022 Bachelor Stakes hero Whelen Springs (12-1) for trainer Lindsay Schultz; eight-year-old millionaire Forewarned for Uriah St. Lewis; and three-year-old Offaly Cool (12-1) for trainer Jacinto Solis. He finished a near-miss second in the Long Branch Stakes at Monmouth three back.
