Delaware Park has an eight-race card lined up today. Some horses to watch:

Race 2 – Allowance

  • Three-year-olds and up will go a mile on the main track in a first-level allowance.
  • How can a horse have 10 wins and over $300,000 in career earnings and still be eligible for a first allowance? One path is that followed by #2 Saint Alfred (5-2), who’s basically been beating up on Massachusetts-breds for trainer Karl Grusmark and who brings jockey Tammi Piermarini with him today. He enters this contest on a three-race win streak, all in state-bred stakes at Suffolk Downs. It’s worth noting, though, that he’s done his best work on off tracks, rather than the fast one he’ll catch today. That steers us towards the favorite, the formful Gerald Bennett trainee #6 High Five Cotton (9-5). Though he’s made 39 career starts, the five-year-old is running as well now as he ever has, including two recent runner-up efforts at this level. This is a distance he likes, and he might be loose on the lead.
  • Selections: 6-2-5

Race 3 – Maiden special weight

  • Maidens three years-old and up will go five furlongs on the turf.
  • If you’re looking for turfy breeding, you could do worse than that of #6 Ventriloquism (3-1). The daughter of Winchill (who’s by Tapit) is out of the ultra-productive Polish Numbers mare Merry Princess. All 10 of her sibs to race are winners, and seven of them have won on the lawn. That number includes the Merry’s Honor, who won a turf sprint stake. He’s been training well enough towards his debut today for trainer Kate DeMasi, who can win first out of the box, and will have Carol Cedeno in the irons.
  • Selections: 6-8-1-3
