Delaware Park horses to watch: October 12
by Frank Vespe
Delaware Park has a nine-race card lined up for Thursday. Scheduled post time is 1:15 p.m. Some horses to watch:
- Race three is a $5,000 claiming race for horses that haven’t four or haven’t won a race in six months going six furlongs on the main track. The favorite and most likely winner here is the Jamie Ness trainee Sam Sparkle (2-1) who has been facing — and running competitively with — better. Another runner here worth a look particularly if you get a square price, is #8 Port More (4-1). This Gone Astray gelding had his two-race win streak snapped last out when fifth against better as the favorite but has a solid record at the trip — 8-3-1-2. He makes his first start for trainer Anthony Margotta, who claimed him from his last, and gets bug rider Erick Garcia — six-for-10 at Delaware Park — in the irons.
- The fourth is a $20,000 claimer for fillies and mares that have never won three going six furlongs on the main track. Morning line favorite Cat Giumarello (2-1) figures to get the right setup and should be tough in here. But a horse who could survive what looks to be a lively early pace — or might sit a bit off it — is the lightly raced #4 Ocala Chrome (4-1). This Hernan Parra trainee has two wins at Delaware and has shown the ability to lead or stalk — and she’s the most lightly raced runner here. Her last wasn’t great, but she keeps bug rider Jose Bracho in the irons and has the right to improve here today.
