Fort Marcy (VA)

Biography

A three-time champion on the grass, Fort Marcy was named Horse of the Year and Champion Older Male Horse by Daily Racing Form in 1970. He set three course records — all at 1½ miles — during his six-year career.  

Bred in Virginia by owner Paul Mellon, Fort Marcy was a gelded son of Amerigo out of the unraced Princequillo mare Key Bridge. After winning only once in 10 starts as a 2-year-old in 1966, Fort Marcy was switched to the turf the following year and posted a record of 7-2-4 from 18 starts and earnings of $236,264. The highlight of his sophomore campaign was a victory over Damascus in the Washington, D.C. International.

A champion turf horse in 1967, 1968, and 1970, Fort Marcy was also named Horse of the Year and Champion Older Male in 1970 by Daily Racing Form. That year, he won the D. C. International for the second time and also scored victories in the United Nations Handicap and Man o’ War Stakes.

Other major wins by Fort Marcy included the Sunset Handicap (setting a Hollywood Park course record of 2:26⅗ for 1½ miles), Hollywood Park Invitational, Stars and Stripes Handicap, Bernard Baruch Handicap, Dixie Handicap (setting a Pimlico course record of 2:27⅖ for 1½ miles), and Bowling Green Handicap (setting a Belmont course record of 2:26⅗ for 1½ miles).

Fort Marcy was retired after his 1971 campaign with a career record of 21-18-14 from 75 starts and earnings of $1,109,791. He won a total of 16 stakes races and ranked seventh all time in career earnings at the time of his retirement.

Fort Marcy died in 1991 at the age of 25 at Rokeby Farm in Upperville, Virginia.
