Who was…

  • Confucius Say?  This evening’s fourth at Charles Town is the Confucius Say for West Virginia-breds going seven eighths of a mile.  The race’s namesake, a son of the Mountain State, was a gelded son of Eastover Court out of the stakes-placed Feel the Power mare Mo Chun.  And if those names mean much to you, kudos for closely following the WV breeding scene!  Confucius Say won 19 races in his career — all but two in the friendly confines of Charles Town — and earned north of $1 million.  The horse earned his first career win as a two year-old and his last, in the Robert R. Hilton Memorial Stakes, at age 10.  In between came a three year injury-related layup.  You can learn more here.
  • Henry S. Clark?  Today’s 10th at Pimlico is the Henry S. Clark Stakes.  Clark, the grandson of 1887 Preakness winning trainer William Jennings, was a trainer of no small repute himself and continued to ply his trade until shortly before his death, in 1999 at age 95.  Clark, a 1982 inductee into the National Racing Hall of Fame, won a record four runnings of the Delaware Handicap — two each with Obeah and Endine.  Details?  Here.
