Gabby Gaudet’s got some thoughts on a Pick 3 play.
It’s another Sunday of live racing at Laurel Park, and Maryland racing analyst Gabby Gaudet returns with some thoughts on the late picks three today. It’s just a 50-cent wager at Laurel, which gives you plenty of opportunity to spread out.

GABBY’S RACING NOTES
[su_list icon=”icon: check”].- Race 8 — (N1X allowance for fillies and mares going six furlongs on the main track) A couple of these runners are really interesting. You obviously have to give a look to #3 Malibu Honey (3-1) for trainer Michael Stidham. She’s got a win and a third from three tries on dirt, and the third came against allowance rivals at Santa Anita. It’s also notable that she has a work over the surface; that’s been important for shippers in recent weeks. #9 Simmadownnow (6-1) is another interesting horse here. She stumbled badly at the start two back, her first race in 15 months, and then they tried her on turf, which wasn’t a terrible effort. Third off the layoff and back at a surface and distance she likes, she has a chance to improve here…
- Race 9 — (First level allowance for fillies and mares 3yo and up going 5 1/2 furlongs on the turf) With the scratch of Exaggerated — who won a Virginia-bred stake impressively yesterday — this race is wide open. A couple of the runners here — #3 Egyptian Music and the 1-1A entry of Tanka and Southern Peach — share a major similarity. All three are runners with sort of unsettled pasts. Egyptian Music, for Linda Rice, has only made nine starts, and her last, which was her best Beyer figure, was her first short sprint on the turf. It was a good effort at Saratoga, where she was compromised by veering out at the start but beaten just three lengths. The horses in the entry, both trained by King Leatherbury, are both returning to the thing they do best, sprinting on the turf, after tries at something else. Tanka, whose most recent turf sprint was a dominant win, has tried a route on the turf and 6 1/2 furlongs on the dirt in her last two. And Southern Peach, who also had a good win in her last turf sprint, most recently tried a route of ground…
- Race 10 — ($25,000 Maiden claiming for fillies and mares 3yo and up going 5 1/2 furlongs on the turf) This is a wide open event, with all of the runners having some holes in their resumes. The favorite is #3 Salty Contender (3-1), who is 0-for-16 and has lost at this level several times. But her speed figures stack up, and her last couple might be her best tries yet. I’ll also take a swing here with #1 Flyin Lion S (10-1), a runner who didn’t run as badly as it looks in her last: she had trouble at the break, which is deadly in these short sprints, but rallied nicely to lose by less than four lengths. She should improve today…
