In the latest edition of our weekly feature with Maryland racing analyst Gabby Gaudet, she plays a Pick 5 and scopes out the sixth.

JACKPOT PICK 5

The skinny: Jackpot wager with a $0.20 unit pays the whole pool to one unique winner, carries over if there are more than one.

Notably: Today’s wager has a carryover of $49,987.  In other words: free money!

Gabby’s take: “It’s a very challenging sequence, with two legs that I think are wide open.  Both the fifth race, which is the first of the sequence, and the ninth (last of the sequence) could be won by any number of horses.”

SCOPING OUT THE SIXTH RACE

[su_list icon=”icon: check”]
  • The particulars: Fillies and mares, 3yo and up, 7 furlongs
  • Conditions: Starter allowance for horses that have started for $5,000 or less in 2013-2014
  • Chalk: #6 Next Best Thing; Mary Eppler trainee won against similar, and at the same distance, last out by almost six lengths… Horacio Karamanos returns to ride her for fourth consecutive time, and the pair own a 3-2-1-0 record… Owns two wins at the tricky 7f distance… Breaking from the outside, will have the chance to secure a good spot, probably stalking the early pace… Two-time winner at the distance in sharp form now… Could bounce off terrific last out… Bottom line: a reluctant single in the P5.
  • Backup choice: #4 Chance Encounter; Kieron Magee trainee was second last out going one mile against ALW N2X horses… Has a big shot to win and is coming off a big effort last out… $5,000 claim in September appears to be rounding into form that saw her win N2X in January… Last out was a solid group top to bottom with two next out winners… Dialing back from one mile to 7f, and horses making that move often have a fitness edge… Bottom line: The one to have if you’re having more than one.
  • Coulda been a contender: #2 Printasticat; Claudio Gonzalez trainee was fourth, beaten almost 10, against first allowance foes last out… Ran super to win the Maryland Million Starter easily and ran well next out in allowance company, second against 7-10 Une Cherise… Hard to toss red-hot Claudio Gonzalez out of any multi-race scenario (26 percent win rate for the meet)… Bottom line: A contender on best but a step below the top pair.
  • Save your money: #1 Inglorious Song, #3 Seven Days, and #5 Sizzling Lassie all have struggled against similar and will need a lot of things to happen to be there in the end… Bottom line: Toss.
