Crews fix water main break near Pimlico Race Course entrance
A broken water main near Pimlico Race Course caused all sorts of problems Tuesday afternoon.
Imagine trying to prepare food for the countless number of people coming to Pimlico for the upcoming Preakness this weekend without clean running water. That's what happened to many workers at the race course.
Crews were fixing a water main break near the main entrance of the building. Security personnel told 11 News the building was closed for the day, but some like chef Raimund Hofmeister, were there prepping for the big race this weekend.
"Suddenly you have to manage and it's a challenge," Hofmeister said.
Hofmeister is a master chef who teaches students at Stratford University. His students are part of a larger team, gaining real-world experience by preparing food for the racegoers.
"Today they had a good taste because we had a main water break. No water came in. Health department was everywhere, made sure everything is fine. We shipped water containers in," Hofmeister said.
Pimlico has had its share of problems. The building dates back to the late 1800s. Last month, the Maryland Jockey Club decommissioned more than 6,000 seats.
They were deemed unsafe. An engineering firm hired by the Maryland Jockey Club found significant deterioration to the northern grandstand.
Now with Tuesday's problem, Hofmeister says he's been through it all.
"I have cooked in floods with upside down milk crates on so you don't have to stay in the water and you still have to feed people and very often in an emergency situation," Hofmeister said.
According to Hofmeister, "There's nothing that can stop you because people need to eat."
As of Wednesday morning, officials said the water main break had been fixed, but a massive hole that was created to reach the pipes still needs to be filled.
11 News reached out to the Stronach Group, which owns the property. They have not yet responded to requests for comment.
The water main break was fixed Tuesday night.
