Timonium picks 2022: GQ Approach August 28

Longtime handicapper Gary Quill got his ‘capping start at Timonium, and he returns once again this year with the GQ Approach, providing Timonium picks and analysis for every day of live racing at the Maryland State Fair.

Where’s the value? When do you eat the chalk, and when do you take a stand against it? And, hey, where’s the corn dog stand? Nobody knows Timonium better than Gary!

Race 1

  1. #4 – Personal Meadow (9-5): Dueled 6-5 fav at GP in latest then tossed anchor; trainer R. Comi knows these types well
  2. #1 – Dontcrossfuzzy (5-2): 1st time v. elders was on turf and didn’t go well; chance for redemption w/ best bull ring rider
  3. #6 – Cairo Kid (8-5): Has awesome 4f speed but never raced just 4f; last visited Winners Circle 14 races ago (9/25/20)

Race 2

  1. #5 – Winston’s Gold (5-2): Toss his turf try and his last 3 race, late speed figs are the best among this motley group of N2L
  2. #3 – Bet On Bitz (7-2): Big class drop to the bottom after just one race Claiming him for $16k; trainer D. Capuano dangles a Filene’s type Sales tag, hoping for win purse $10k + $5k claim?
  3. #2 – Under Fire (9-2): Scratched from opening day race of same level but longer; this seems like easier spot or red flag?

Race 3

  1. #7 – Five Star Phil (7-2): * BEST BET * Takes appropriate class drop while foes having similar results v lesser than his
  2. #5 – Red Mesa (4-1): 3 y.o. already a 3-time winner while his elder rivals meet N3L condition; may be distance challenged
  3. #2– El Zopilote (8-1): Last time he ran on a fast, natural dirt track he won; 10 lb bug Sara Hess’ next win will be first

Race 4

  1. #3 – Highland Dream (9-2): Third race since a short layoff usually provides good results; speed figs ascending as well
  2. #1 – Stavanger (3-1): Makes Maryland racing debut after going 0 for 9 at 5 different tracks in LA, IN and KY; through the first 2 days of The Big T meet, out-of-town shippers win
  3. #4 – Galway Lad (6-1): Starting to scrape the bottom of the barrel hoping this one could graduate today despite his best finish is 5th in 6 starts but those were v. better

Race 5

  1. #1 – Shackaboom (9-5): Has competed at a much higher level so why the drop in class? The reality is that there are not many racing opportunities for 7-time winners
  2. #7 – Captain Sam (7-2): Been showing early foot on both turf and dirt; these 4-furlong events comes down to whoever gets an alert break, and this mare has a jock who ensure that
  3. #5 – Dat Dares Gold (4-1): 8 y.o. mare has started 61 races with only 1 at this short distance BUT with plenty of her foes having early speed, then MAYBE she can pass most of them

Race 6

  1. #10 – Here Wego (8-1): $ LONGSHOT $ Has disappointed his backers in his last 3 dirt outings as Post Time favorite; let’s hope that ends today with switch to hot apprentice rider
  2. #2– Drive by Layover (5-2): Looks to get back-to-back wins while getting class relief; trainer D. Capuano has gaudy numbers when dropping off a win (29%)
  3. #9 – Jammin Still (8-1): Let’s get crazy thinking this one can get his trainer his 1st win of the year; one huge positive is jock choose to keep mount v. #3 who has better shot per 6-1 ML.

Race 7

  1. #5 – Winked (3-5): There are 3-5 favorites and there are 3-5 favorites; this 4 y.o. faces a suspect trio who have raced and two making their racing debut; the latter are the only threat
  2. #2 – Pray for the U S A (7-2): Amen! And if you like this filly to win, a prayer might help though her sire (Blofeld) offspring tend to like The Big T bullring as does this one’s trainer
  3. #3 – Twizlers Hurricane (8-1): 4 y.o. must be a late bloomer due to not making her racing debut til today; nice bloodlines so it would not be a shock if she upsets the heavy favorite

Race 8

  1. #4 – Nottoway (3-1): Seems trainer L. Gaudet decided to blow the dust off this 7 y.o. as he’s been away for 4 months but needs the extra rest between races; needs lead to win
  2. #1 – Fully Connected (3-1): Will challenge the top pick right out of the gate for the lead; speed figures keep climbing
  3. #6 – Primal Destiny (2-1): CT-based trainer seems to specialize in very fast horses at 4-fulongs; a cut below these?

Race 9

  1. #2 – Genieinabridle (3-1): This maiden took on winners in a restricted stakes race in second start w/o embarrassing herself; should make short work out of these winless gals
  2. #1 – Anotherdaygoneby (3-1): Raced at Saratoga two back; in last 2 days here 2 other Saratoga shippers crossed wire 1st
  3. #7 – Galactic Tide (12-1): Has faced better groups of maidens   finishing far back but in one race earned a speed figure that can earn her the diploma at a huge price in the nightcap
