Delaware Park has an eight-race card lined up for Labor Day, September 2, and the finale is for Arabians. Some horses to watch:

Race 5 — Allowance

  • Fillies and mares three and up will six furlongs on the main track in a first-level allowance.
  • How good are Arkansas-breds, anyway? We don’t see a lot of them here in the East, but perhaps #2 Bettyann (6-1) will help us to answer the question. The sophomore Sky Mesa filly won at first asking against fellow Arkansas-breds back in January but has not raced since. Now shifted into Mike Gorham’s barn, she’s run off three moderate five-furlong breezes in preparation for her return to racing. Gorham wins at an 11 percent clip with horses off longer layoffs. Alex Cintron is named.
  • Selections: 1-2-4

Race 7 — Allowance/optional claiming

  • Three-year-olds and up will go six furlongs on the main track in a second-level allowance with an optional claiming tag of $35,000.
  • When last seen, #6 Confessor (8-1) was mounting a furious late rally in the Grade 3 Chick Lang Stakes at Pimlico back in May. Dawdling towards the rear, he shaved six lengths off his deficit in the final eighth of a mile. He was fifth, but beaten just 2 1/2 lengths in that race. He’s been away since and has three half-mile moves for trainer Carl Doran. His performance in May — at 38-1 odds — suggests this might be a real runner, and it’ll be interesting to see how he comes back against a pretty salty field.
  • Selections: 6-5-7-3
