In today’s Midweek Movie, Jeff Krulik wonders how a Hall of Fame trainer watches a race.  Fortunately, his ever-curious camera finds Jonathan Sheppard, intently watching the ninth race from Colonial Downs on Virginia Derby day.

He’s watching a horse named Sondheim, a five year-old Theatrical gelding he trains for Mrs. Magalen Bryant.  Sondheim broke his maiden at first asking back in 2011, also at Colonial Downs — and then didn’t race again for two years and four days, until early in the Colonial meet.  He finished sixth that day, and the race here was his second off the layoff.

Jonathan Sheppard, of course, is the Hall of Fame trainer whose big horses have included the likes of Storm Cat, Informed Decision, Forever Together, With Anticipation, and a passel of terrific jump horses.  And, obviously, a less-known horse named Sondheim who… well, let’s just watch the video and see how he does.
